Report: YouTube Working on PPV Service

Despite abysmal failures with previous attempts to charge for content, Google-owned YouTube is reportedly working with several Hollywood studios towards the launch of a global pay-per-view video service. The Financial Times is reporting that the service could launch as early as the end of this year.

According to the Times, new releases on the service will cost about $5 will be streaming-only. Titles will be available the same day they are released on DVD.

According to an “executive with knowledge of the plans”:

“Google and YouTube are a global phenomenon with a hell of a lot of eyeballs – more than any cable or satellite service . . . They’ve talked about how many people they could steer to this .

. . It’s a huge number.”

Do you think this service will be any more successful than YouTube’s previous paid rental attempts? Can the world’s most popular video-viewing site turn this new service into a cash cow?

Everyone is selling and renting the same movies at the same prices except for netflix and redbox. Youtube will be a yawner in this business.

This will probably be like the video download of “Brokeback Mountain” where the price was $20, far above the rental of DVD purchase price. Basically they will get greedy and overprice.

Again these companies cut out the middle man and offer product with a lower picture and audio quality and then charge a premium because of “convenience”. I can officially say there is no way I will pay $5 ever again to rent a movie. I will never pay more than $2.99 in my entire life and that would only be for 1080p with a decent bit rate. When I think of online, I think of choices and cheaper, so prices should be lower. Also we gotta pray for those lobbiest to keep working on keeping the internet limitless because more companies are trying to put those stupid caps on how much we download, which will seriously cripple downloading and surfing. My cell phone company is offering 5 GB internet using my phone as a modem for an extra $25 a month. I often download just 1 show a week @ 2 GB for 720p 40 min program which is 8 GB a month. Right there I would be 3 GB over @ 49 cents a GB it makes those $2.99 HD downloads even less attractive. So If I am that worried over tv shows, I don’t even want to think about movies which are higher prices and larger download, again unless they reduce quality which they almost always do. So instead of having to worry about price, quality, if I have to install a player and if my net is gonna go down while streaming, I’d rather just do a few taps on a Redbox screen and be treated to low cost HD movies!
