That tablet you have sitting on your coffee table over there? It may not be making Hollywood very happy. This notion comes from research firm Deloitte, who claims that a surge in tablet usage is encouraging consumers to rent their movies rather than purchase them.

Deloitte reports that 28 percent of respondents to a recent survey stated that they would rent a movie this year, versus 12 percent of respondents who said they would purchase a movie on disc or digital. The firm attributes much of this disparity with the ever-increasing use of tablets.
Alma Derricks, director of Deloitte Consulting, observed the following about the firm’s findings:
“The explosion of media-capable devices has had a striking impact on consumer behavior that poses interesting challenges for the entertainment industry and longstanding business models”
Derricks went on to say that web-connected TVs also may encourage consumers to stream/rent content rather than own it:
“More than half of consumers have their TVs connected to the Internet in some way, and that group watches TV content from online sources over 40% of the time. This behavior impacts both the entertainment and advertising industries, and highlights the continued importance of using multiple platforms and devices to build brands and engage consumers.

Are you more prone to rent or stream movies on your iPad, Kindle, Galaxy, etc. than purchase them?
[via Home Media Magazine]
I recently spent more than a fair amt per movie for several titles now available to download in HD on my Kindle. All the titles were catalog releases that I know I will watch many times. For new movies I would probably be more inclinded to rent as there are less I want to own now
I refuse to stream movies. I don’t like the quality of video or the fact that I can’t keep the movie/video to view later. I also don’t like trying to watch a video on such a small screen. There is a reason I paid for the 60 inch TV in the living room. Why would I choose a 3 or 4 inch phone or a 10 inch tablet over the TV? Until they are no longer available, I will always purchase a DVD so that I can have a physical copy (as a backup) and then save a digital copy to my desktop (which is connected to my TV in the living room) to watch.
Since you can’t actually BUY anything with DRM, I’m more likely to rent. I haven’t rented anything that way so far, I stream from Netflix and rent from Redbox.
I’ve never understood why someone would want to buy a movie they’ve never seen. Very few movies are good enough that I would want to own a copy. I have bought a bunch of movies over the years, but they are always movies that I either rented or saw in the theater first.
I haven’t brought a movie in over 5 years. I did buy 6 seasons of the TV Show Psych 2 years ago. I’ve stopped buy movies b/c most are crap movies that you would only see once. FYI, I’m about to sell 75% of the movies/Shows I do have.
