images (1)The holidays, which are all-important to retailers, are nearly upon us. Consumer electronics manufacturers might feel a bit grinch-like, however, when they read a new report from research firm IHS.

According to the firm’s report, nearly 3 out of 4 U.S. consumers are disinterested in purchasing a web-connected “smart” TV in the next year. The relatively high price of these sets, along with ignorance about their internet capabilities, are the two main factors keeping interest in these items low.

Veronica Thayer, analyst for consumer electronics and technology at IHS, said the following about her firm’s findings:

“The latest results of the IHS survey show that TV makers have both a challenge and an opportunity when it comes to selling consumers smart TVs . . . Few consumers at present want to buy smart TVs now. However, demand can be cultivated if television brands better explain to consumers what smart TVs are, what they do and why they should buy one.”

It seems manufacturers need to better market the capabilities of the latest generation of smart TVs, which are often offering features comparable to many popular set-top streaming boxes. In consumers’ defense, web connectivity and interface on smart TVs in years past have been pretty rudimentary and not user-friendly.

Do you own a smart TV, Insiders, and if so, is it worth the price premium over a “dumb” set? If you don’t have a smart TV, will you be getting one anytime soon?

I got smart tv’s from LG in 2011 and 2013. The older one can’t seem to get MGo and the layout for Hulu Plus is not as good. I think as apps for all the major players make it to all devices and works reliably then I think smart tv’s are very attractive. I also think once hulu gets it so all shows work on tv’s not this “web only” crap you see for shows like “The Voice” and “Witches of East End” then I can enjoy my plus membership more. Also CBS should sign up with them! I love using the apps for Netflix, Vudu and Amazon and since right now I don’t have a DVR I really rely on a decent streaming service. I don’t like to stream as much from my laptop as I usually want to be on it while watching my shows. Some sites also need to work on letting you go to where you left off easier and not go ad crazy when needing to skip ahead.

Streaming boxes (like Roku or Apple TV) can be updated. But with the smart TV, you are stuck with whatever version of software the manufacture put on the TV. If next years model comes out with a new service like Redbox Instant, your previous years TV doesn’t get the update. Roku, for example, is always adding new apps. Can’t say the same for smart TVs (or even smart blu-ray players).

“Disinterested” means “impartial”; you want “uninterested” or “not interested.” One way to remember this is that in court, you want a disinterested judge but not an uninterested one.

I disagree. Maybe sales are down but smart tv’s are the way to go. I am finaly disconnecting cable next week. The only reason I kept it was the Spanish programming for my wife. I have a 42″ Visio Smart tv that is also connected to my computer. A Roku box for the bedroom. When my 26″ Vega goes( It is 10 years old an going strong) I will replace with a smart tv. It is just too good of a tv to mothball like my other tube tv’s. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime( not very happy with the streaming content of amazon). I might get Hulu Plus. All work on my smart tv and Roku box. If you truly want to get off the cable company bandwagon then smart tv’s are the way to go.

Will be getting off comcast rollercoaster soon. Looking into other solutions for my 55″ 9 yr. Old sony . Will be utilizing my wifi router to my tv with rocu box for programing. My tv is in good shape, and will upgrade when it goes, no hurry. But their are options for all who are tired of Comcast monopoly, and greedy monthly service!
