Cable-cordWhile not surprising, this is a very interesting finding: broadband users who own a web-connected “smart” TV are twice as likely to cancel their pay-TV service as unconnected TV owners. This finding comes from a new report by The Diffusion Group (TDG).

Michael Greeson, co-founder and president of TDG, observed the following about his firm’s research:

“For years, the casual relationship between the two behaviors has been questioned, and rightly so . . . Yet TDG has argued for several years that this relationship would develop over time and hit an important landmark moment of sorts in 2013.

That is indeed what has transpired, and now the pay-TV industry and prominent analysts are coming to terms with the fact those with access to online video sources on their TV are more likely than their counterparts to be reconsidering the value proposition of incumbent pay-TV services.”

In my house, we fit this profile exactly. We own a smart TV and  have completely “cut the cord”, relying on an HD antenna, Redbox, and Netflix for our home entertainment. What a about you, Insiders? Do you own a smart TV, and if so, have you or will you be cutting the cable cord?

In 2008 we cut the cord. When we discovered how many channel we get over our HD antenna (and it continues to grow) plus we discovered that the rare good shows on cable we could get over Netflix or Hulu+ and we never looked back. First we were using the Nintendo Wii, then Roku and now a blu-ray player that makes our TV a smart TV. With Cromecast and other dongles, you can make any TV a smart TV. Now I ask people why they waste their money on cable/satellite when the future of TV is internet streaming. This is true ala-carte and my money won’t go towards trash like honey boo boo or other “reality” TV shows.

U don’t need a “smart tv” ///just connect an HDMI cable between your PC and conputer, using your tv as a second monitor and stream away! Been doing THAT with the $4.99 netflix and an antenna (30 channels free!) for 6~ years now!

We completely cut the cord about 2 years ago, left DirecTV and a $60+ monthly payment behind. We use an antenna, and also have a PC connected via HDMI for streaming and for recording OTA programs. We use Netflix on a smart Blu-ray player to supplement the other options (kids programming, etc). Also use Redbox.

    Haven’t looked back!

That’s all fine and good but what if u have a bundle with Internet you still have to have a wireless plan in order to be able to do streaming.
I cannot just cut the cord can anyone suggest a good company for relatively fast Internet that doesn’t cost a bundle?

      Hi,

Check the net out in your City.. You can get the Net by itself. if they tell you , you can’t that is B.S. You can get the Net By itself from anyone who gives it. The bundle bit is just a way to con you. ( Yes you can cut the Cord). You can do like many are doing. Dropping the TV part. And just keeping the Net part. Most people that are saying they cut the cord. They mean the TV part. Many must have the Cable Co. For the net. As I do.. I Cut the TV part out. ( The Cord). I mean really who wants to pay 40-50 a month for crap on TV.. And really you will end up paying a arm for the net. You must have a good high speed deal to get the streaming good.

We pay $88 a month to Dish for TV! Then I pay $83 to TimeWarner for phone & net!!! Gonna change net to higher speed then dropping phone…. Still trying to figure out a way to drop the dish…. husband is big sports fan! at least during baseball season we buy online MLB package for $99 and but can’t find Golf & Football.
What kind of HD antenna do I need? We don’t get any channels without cable or dish.

      A. You can drop the Dish. And get the MLB deal on your computer. And send it to your TV.. No big deal. You can get a better deal from TimeWarner on the net & TV
set up.. You can also get a good cell phone deal from Metro for the phone. If you like.
I am getting a very good fast set up on the net from T/W The net speed is going at 50 now.. And everything comes in fast and good.
