Roku3withHeadphonesOnce considered a stopgap measure by the consumer electronics industry, over-the-top (OTT) streaming devices like the Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Roku, and others aren’t going anywhere.

This finding comes from a new report by research firm IHS, which predicts that global shipments of streaming media devices will surpass 31 million units this year.

Daniel Simmons director of connected home research at IHS Technology, said the following about the space in the market that OTT streaming devices have carved out for themselves:

“It was assumed that smart TVs, Blu-ray disc players and gaming consoles would take the place of [cable] set-top devices; however, while consumer adoption of smart devices has grown considerably, OTT STBs have still managed to flourish,”

Is there a streaming set-top box in your home, Insiders? If not, will there be one soon?

Every day a new streaming media center hits the market, and with Verizon buying AOL just to deliver streaming, no doubt streaming is here to stay and will dominate the TV programming entertainment arena. What I like best about streaming TV is I can watch what I want when I want, so no longer need DVD recorder or player, so with access to every tv show and movie ever made being streamed, never mind free payperview PPV access using streaming technology, I predict the growth will be even greater as people look to cut cable and dump dish to save money, never mind Redbox revenues dropping. If not for world expansion, they would already be feeling the pinch as I see it. Here is the latest low cost entry FREE-PPV.com in the streaming TV Movie Sports arena.

Read Box’s day’s are numbered. It’s just how much time do they have. As many have said. Disc will be a thing of the past. And streaming will be it.
RedBox could try the streaming deal again with someone new?
They could also become. The Old DVD RedBox.
We rent DVD’s from the past?
The big thing with streaming is. Millions still don’t have the speed on the net to get streaming as they should. It still jumps, stops, goes. And so on.
Fast net speeds at a good price still need to be put in place.
But yes! Streaming is the thing.

The article is referring to OTT devices not smart tv’s. I have a smart tv and a smart blu-ray player and a Roku box. I use the Roku box on a standard tv. I stream more on my computer to the tv than through my smart tv. the reason is the browsing of titles is much easier in the PC version of the apps.
Also why pay extra for every smart tv you buy when you can get an OTT device and tv for less money. My Visio smart tv does not get HBOGO, Xfinity and some other apps.(Not available). Roku does not have these either. Android OTT devices do have have more apps. OTT devices can be moved to different tv’s/locations. I think OTT devices will be around for a while.

I just bought another media player (the only thing “over-the-top” here is the desire of the “experts” to make up their own nonsensical buzzwords). I use it to conveniently play my own media (DLNA off my network servers), not to stream off the Internet. All of my multimedia devices can stream from various services, but I never use them for that, not even the free ones (e.g., YouTube). Reading the reviews on Amazon and many other sources, it’s clear that I am far from being an exception.

The conclusions of the article are a bit off.
