Consumers clearly aren’t ready for all of their content to go to the cloud just yet, if a new report is to be believed. According to a new report from Centris Research, Blu-ray player household penetration has reached 26% as of Q4 2011.

The number is a substantial 46% increase from the same quarter in 2010.

Interestingly, the number of households with a DVD player increased 4% in the same period to 91% household penetration. DVR penetration increased to 38% and HDTV penetration increased to 63%.

Bill Beaumont, president of Centris, said the following about his firm’s findings:

“The [data] shows that U.S. households continue to purchase a broad range of technologies,”

Should we not write off the humble physical disc just yet, Insiders? Have you added a Blu-ray player to your home in the past year?

The only annoying thing about Blu-ray players is that you have to do a firmware update every once in a while.

To Shane or Michael, I’ve gotten a notice that Redbox has changed its billing practices. Can you look into this and do a post. The link is here: http://www.redbox.com/singlebilling?cid=EM:tr_sbr

Yes, The change is good for redbox. Rent one dvd bring back next day or three days later and recieve a charge when you bring the movie back. Rent two movies bring one back next day and bring the next one back a day later then you will charged for both movies on one transaction when the second movie is returned.

Conclusion: Lower Transactions = Lower credit card fees for redbox is the end results. No benefit to the customer really.

Alice, thanks for the heads up on the single billing change!

I’m OK with single billing, but like to know the mechanics. Good link.

I just got my first Blu-ray player back in November[2011], I’m loving the better sound and picture. My player is WiFi ready and can stream movies, but I can’t see ever doing this.

With many players for sale with streaming capabilities, for the same or even less than plain streaming devices, why in the world wouldn’t one buy a player to play physical media AND stream videos.

    I don’t trust the cloud.

All hail the mighty cloud, the precious cloud, the cloud that must be obeyed!

In all seriousness, I agree – We don’t need no stinkin’ cloud.

I don’t need a new DVD player now, but if I needed one, I’d probably purchase a blu-ray player. They’re pretty inexpensive now, so if I was in the market I’d want to look at up-to-date technology. However, as long as my current DVD works, I’m 100% happy with it and see no need to make a change.

    Agreed,

I didn’t purchase mine until my old one died, and it finally did, and my Blu-Ray was less costly than the old stardard DVD player I had purchased a decade ago. Like everything, the prices will go down, just look at flat screen TV’s, mind boggling how you can purchase a 42″ 1080 LED for under $500. and I paid $3,000. three years ago. lol

The blu-ray player with its streaming capabilities helped us in cutting the cord… no more cable bill! We watch a ton of streaming content, Hulu Plus, Netflix. We also buy blu-ray discs almost exclusively now. Have found some really good deals through coupons and rebates, particularly with family-friendly movies.

As for buying digital content… not for me. If there ever comes a day when I can’t buy the physical media, then I will be strictly rentals only.

I have to agree with Phil…If there does come the day that we can’t buy the movie we will just got back to renting and block Buster will be back in business.
I enjoy being able to own some movies, not all in which case I will rent.
