Ever wondered how many people are actually watching Netflix hits like Orange is the New Black or House of Cards? TV ratings company Nielsen Media does, and they’re finally going to do something about it.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Nielsen will soon begin to measure subscription online video services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. The services until now have kept their ratings a closely guarded secret. Nielsen wants to measure ratings in part so that media companies can see how their content is performing on these streaming services, which could affect the future costs of content licensing.

Nielsen senior VP Brian Fuhrer said the following about his firm’s plans:
“Our clients will be able to look at their programs and understand: Is putting content on Netflix impacting the viewership on linear and traditional VOD?”
Are we going to be surprised at the height (or depth) of Netflix and Amazon ratings when Nielsen begins to release numbers?

Do the metrics really matter? Nielsen/Aribron ratings are for ADVERTISERS! to determine ad rates.
Who cares who’s NOT watching ad sponsored content!
It sounds like this could have a detrimental affect on Netflix and Amazon users.
The thing is if a certain tv show is has high rating the studio that owns is gonna increase its price for its new season or when is time to renew contract and we might pay for it
Don’t really care how many are watching….if I like a program, I’ll watch it even if I’m the only one. Joe is correct…ratings are for new contracts.
