Google+_IconIf you’ve noticed some additional free time since cutting the cable cord and switching to Netflix, it might not just be in your head. According to streaming data site CordCutting.com, By subscribing to Netflix instead of watching traditional cable, you are spared from viewing about six days of commercials.

According to Business Insider, here’s how CordCutting.com figured that out:

  • First, it took Netflix’s recent 75 million subscriber mark.

  • Then, it combined that with a quote from CEO Reed Hastings that said subscribers stream 125 million hours every day.

  • That means every subscriber streams about 1 2/3 hours per day.

  • Then it looked at Nielsen data, which showed that the typical hour of cable TV includes 15 minutes and 38 seconds of commercials.

  • If you combine that with the Netflix subscriber data, then you get that each subscriber avoids around 158.5 hours per year of commercials — if they were watching Netflix instead of cable TV.

Howard Shimmel, a chief research officer at Time Warner, thinks CordCutting.com may be onto something here:

“We know one of the benefits of an ecosystem like Netflix is its lack of advertising . . . Consumers are being trained there are places they can go to avoid ads.”

Is being able to dodge ads an attractive part of Netflix’s business plan to you, Insiders?

Until you have streamed, you won’t realize just how great it is to skip commercials. I have been streaming for past two years and each hour show is only 45 minutes, so looking at how much wasted time I have saved, it is several months to date, love it, hate commercials. PERIOD

Streaming is the way to go. And NO COMMERICALS.
I have Netflix, Amazon, Warner Archives & CBS All Access.
And not ONE COMMERICALS. NOT ONE! THEY STINK!

CBS All Access has a ton of commercials. My wife watches her soaps on it when she forgets to DVR them and it takes longer than watching them broadcast. I love my DVR though

I never watch commercials, anyway. I use my DVR to time-shift everything and just skip them. Before that, I’d just mute the sound and do something until its over. And I use my satellite service for programming that is not available on streaming services, like live events (sports), I don’t have the time for shows.

This will be all fine and all. UNTIL. They start putting caps on your net use. Comcast is all ready doing it. Charter has just got the Ok to buy Time Warner.
I did read yesterday that the JD has backed off on the rules they & the FCC put on the Charter/Time Warner deal. So that will let Charter put Caps on your net use also. So you better get ready for your net Bill to jump a good 50 + % soon.
Keep in mind if you have a family of 4,5.. You will be over your limit in no time.
If you watch just one HD movie a day on NetFlix you will be over in about 20-25 days. And that does not count your everyday net use.
The online movie bit is going to take a big hit when all the Co’s start putting the Caps on your net use.
When that bit starts. I will just drop all my online Movie stuff. And just use NetFlix in the mail..
In English. Get ready to bend over & smile!

First off, contrary to what DanoFive0 says, the sky is not falling. Until something hits me, it’s not ignorance, it’s just someone else’s speculation of what giant corporations may or may not do after cutting deals with government bureaucracy. If DanoFive0 knows better than that, he wouldn’t be posting here because he’d be too busy on his private island being served by whatever endentured servants he wants serving him.

On that note, not having commercials is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! And fast forwarding through them when I have a show DVR’d is, in some strange way, very satisisfying. It’s kind of saying “screw you” to the advertisers as their multimillion dollar campaigns whiz by at 3X or 4X speed. Ha!

And back to a serious note here, DaniFive0, no one, and I mean NO ONE is asking for your personal advice on any matter that I have read. Please do not editorialize your self proclaimed expertise on subjects that are so far out of your reach that it’s funny. Really funny. Ha ha.

Not a personal attack, just a suggestion. Stop editorializing and get back to your Netflix subscription (with DVDs by mail) on your 4K TVs. Yes, we know what is in your entertainment system and what you subscribe to. All you need to do now is post you address, where you put your spare key, and when you won’t be at home. I’m not going to do it, but someone will.

Does anyone else tire of other’s self proclaimed expertise on any and all matters?

    Amen, jonmac.

From the number of posts and posters here, not very many people visit this site. I, for one, am so tired of reading his posted drivel of the same thing over and over again on every article and topic posted. The dude must live a lonely life.
