imagesNorway and Denmark, the former being one of the fastest adopters of Blu-ray discs on the planet, are now seeing the fastest decline in the purchase of physical discs anywhere in the world. The culprit is Netflix, according to IHS Technology.

DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales in Norway and Denmark have dropped more than 50 percent over the last few years, and the finger should be pointed directly at Netflix and other streaming video providers.

According to Tony Gunnarsson, video analyst at IHS:

“Historically one of the worlds’ most advanced video markets relative to its size, Norway was the first Western market to experience a very steep decline in DVD and Blu-ray Disc in 2013, with an unprecedented decline (38%) in consumer spending on packaged video in that year,”

As Netflix prepares to expand into other European markets this year, Gunnarsson thinks the pattern may continue:

“The current trend in the Nordics is likely to be repeated across many developed markets in the years to come, and as such the latest trends in Norway should be keenly observed by everyone with an interest in home entertainment,”

How long do you think it will take for this trend to make its way over to this side of the Atlantic?

Well think about it… Why pay $24.99 -$29.99 for a Blue-Ray DVD. Unless you really like it. And I am hearing more and more people saying PASS. Not worth it.
And really 90% of the stuff that is out. Is Crap. Are some remake of some remake of last years remake. I sit tight. And hit Target. I find all kinds of Blue-Ray disc on sale. And all kinds for $5.00 to 9.00 bucks.
And yup! I have Netflix online and three out in the mail..

The Blu-Ray VS HD DVD war ended with a small victory for Blu-Ray. Discs are on their way out as more and more services convert to a cloud based platform for games (Steam, XBL Arcade, PSN, so on), music, and video/movies (Netflix, Red Box Instant, Apple TV, Amazon Prime service, so on). Not sure why people are amazed when this has been going on for a bit.

Apple’s MacBook switched to the MacBook Air because most users didn’t really use the disc drive very much. Tablets like the iPad, Surface and others have overtaken desktop and laptop sales and increase every single year. None of those devices have disc drives and most never even care.

But like DanoFive0 mentioned, why pay $20-$30 for one Blu-Ray disc when you could have one month of Netflix for about the save price with Instant Watch and access to hundreds of cartoons, movies, documentaries and more plus 1 disc at a time and could easily watch quite a few films each month that way. Also as he points out most films coming out of Hollywood are just plain crap. J.J. Abrams and Michael Bay are leading the charge for getting as much half thought out crap as possible to the masses.

Plus Netflix is producing their own content like Orange Is The New Black.

Everyone should expect this not so surprising trend to continue as time goes on.
