download (20)The most recent Black Friday shopping frenzy proved to be very lucrative for Hollywood, according to a new report from research firm Nielsen Home Entertainment.

Nielsen is reporting that Black Friday weekend shoppers purchased an average of four new DVD or Blu-ray titles, with 37 percent of total shoppers purchasing a movie disc of some sort. Interestingly, 69 percent of shoppers reported that at least some of their movie purchases were for themselves, rather than gifts.

Massive discounts on DVDs and Blu-rays drove prices of some titles down to as low as $1.99.

Did you pick up any BDs or DVDs this past Black Friday? If so, how many?

As someone who has over 400 titles in my collection I feel like I have gotten most of what I wanted. I kind of felt like anything I might have wanted to buy was too much @ $9.99, but then again I think things that are $7.99 should be $5. I like deals and am more willing to wait. I did happen to go to Walmart for food items and every title I wanted seemed just a bit higher than the value I thought it held. Maybe next year will bring more I want. I doubt nothing will beat 2010 when I was lining the cart with deals.

This is the 1st time, on Black Friday, that I did not purchase any DVDs. The titles offered & price point just weren’t right.

At $4, Princess Bride was finally mine on Blu-Ray! :) These are close to the close-out prices for HD DVD ($2-$3) that I paid a years ago when Toshiba went belly up on the format. Some good deals were to be had.

Overall tho, I don’t really buy many movies anymore. Streaming from Netflix is much better deal at $8/mo. Or free from many Roku sources.
