Microsoft, who usually shows up late to the game but makes up for it with deep pockets, is reputedly working to create a subscription-based TV service on its Xbox console.
Citing unnamed sources, Reuters is reporting that the service may be as far as a year away. One possible version of the service has Microsoft charging a monthly fee for access via the Xbox to major networks such as ABC, ESPN or CNN.

Microsoft is also reportedly looking into creating custom programming packages bundling sports or children’s programming.
News Corp (Fox) CEO Chase Carey, for one, embraces the arrival of alternative TV services such as the one Microsoft is allegedly contemplating.

Said Carey:
“The emergence of platforms like that — from people like Microsoft which is really more a theory at this point, or Netflix — increases the value of content and brands and those who create the content and channels that actually the business and drives consumer demand,”
With so many power players already in the game, would a new pay-TV service by Microsoft stand a chance? If Microsoft offered a service that was a true alternative to cable/dish providers and appealed to cord-cutters, would you be interested, Insiders?

I would be interested in anyone that could offer a TRUE alternative to cable. But having to subscribe to multiple services to get all the major networks or having to have multiple consoles/players is just a pain in the ass.
Cable will survive because of it’s convenience.
Anything Microsoft does has a possibility of surviving just because of the amount of money they can throw at it. I agree with jimates – i’m not subsribing to a ton of different services to get some of this and some of that. It will be interesting to see how everything shuffles out.
Microsoft has the muscle to pull off a la carte pay tv service. I would be on board. I’d also welcome certain small packages, but give the customer the option for single tv network viewing licences or packaged similar tv network viewing licences.
