Most of the attention and glory go to online services, but the wheezy physical disc still owns the biggest piece of the movie rental pie, according to a report from research firm NPD Group. 62 percent of film rentals are occurring through DVD or Blu-ray by mail, kiosk rentals, and brick and mortar stores.

Physical media’s reign, however, may be short-lived as online renting is growing at a much faster rate than physical.

Russ Crupnick, senior VP of industry analysis for the NPD Group, said the following about his firm’s findings:

“Kiosk and subscription Internet streaming are generating strong user satisfaction ratings, including future rental intent, price and value, which is reflected in market-share gains . . . Netflix is frequently the most popular video application on connected devices, so an increase in households with Web-connected Blu-ray Disc players, tablets, and smart TVs will lead to still more video streaming activity.”

Insiders, what percentage of your movie rentals are on physical disc versus online?

I don’t stream movies online so 100% of my movie rentals/watching is on physical disc.

I have NetFlix to streem movies I want. And I did have Block Buster to get movies at the store. I was a good deal. I was getting 16 movies a month for $16.50. But they closed the store near me. And the store now is 20 miles from me. So no more Block Buster.
So now I use RedBox, the Library to get my physical disc.

I used Blockbuster because of in store returns and no waiting for the next movie to be shipped, because I could trade at the store, while waiting for next shipment to arrive. Then Blockbuster closed all stores in my area, so I went to Netflix. They were great for a while, but then it seemed like no matter what I put in my want list, I waited some times months for a selection to be shipped. Streaming, forget it, they only have the older movies available for that, I’ll wait till you can stream first run movies. I now use Redbox, because all I have to do is go online to reserve my movies and pick them up at my convenience, I spend the same amount as I did with Blockbuster or Netflix and I get what I want, at the time I want. The only thing I would say about any of these rental stores or Redbox is start putting in 3D movies for rental.

Right on, 3D disc for rental, now there’s a good idea, come on Netflix and Redbox, give us that option.

Of course the rental DVD disc is still king. Most of us want the NEW RELEASES.
I also like NEW “small unknown” films and foreign films. None of those are available on streaming. I’m not interested in old movies or old TV shows.
I use Redbox every week for the BIG,well-known title releases and I use Neflix-thru the mail- for the less well-known titles.
The only way I would ever add live streaming would be if they would stream all the new releases. Right now the streaming selection is horrible-mostly geared towards kids or people who don’t care what they watch. The selections are GRIM. There are NO brick and mortar stores within 100 miles of my house. They’ve all been closed for 5 years or longer.
I’d pay (more) for streaming if the new titles were there.
I’d NEVER use TV PPV because the charge is TOO high. $4.99 to $9.99 in my area.
