Report: 3DTV Sales Continue to Rise

Despite all the skeptics out there, 3DTV continues to gain traction in consumers’ homes. According to a new report from The NPD Group, 3DTV sales increased 74 percent in the first quarter of the year versus the same period in 2011.

Interestingly, NPD also reported that just 14 percent of consumers planning on buying a flat-panel TV in the next six months called 3D capability a “must have.”

Ben Arnold, director of industry analysis for The NPD Group, said the following about the rise of 3DTV:

“3D has been a success for the television market from a sales perspective . . . However, few consumers cite watching content in 3D as a reason for purchasing a TV, indicating that other factors such as screen size, resolution and Internet connectivity hold more importance.”

It would seem that 3D capability may still just be considered “gravy” to a majority of purchasers.

Arnold summed up his firm’s feelings towards 3DTV adoption thusly:

“Our research suggests ownership of 3DTV doesn’t necessarily mean consumers have adopted the technology . . . Getting owners to put on glasses and watch content is the real measure of 3D’s success.

Could it simply be that 3DTV sales are rising because a higher percentage of TVs come with 3D capability standard? Do you own a 3DTV, Insiders, and if so, have you put its 3D capabilities to use?

    Interesting,

I had not considered 3D due to the fact you still need glasses to watch it, plus the fact that you have to have a very large screen before the effects are worth it. Perhaps prices will fall even further which will make it more feasable, but like all large screen TV’s, they are dropping like a rock in the last few years, and with LED technology, I suspect they will continue to drop in price.

I love these bogus “reports.” Not to mention Fudgy numbers.

Just because most of the newer TV’s come with the 3D feature, doesn’t mean people are buying them for that said feature.

Like trying to find a Blu-Ray player that DOES NOT have streaming capabilities. Good Luck.

3D is a sad, desperate attempt to attract a sale.
What else can the market offer now that HD is on EVERYTHING?

Even Star Wars figures come with 3D glasses..
I almost fell on the floor laughing so hard when I saw them…
