It’s Thanksgiving again, that time of year when we gather with family and friends, stuff ourselves, and make our shopping plans for Black Friday.

Another Thanksgiving tradition for many is to recount all of the things that we are grateful for. Like many of you, Insiders, the Inside Redbox team has a lot to be thankful for this year, and we’d like to share our (home entertainment-related) list with you.

Choice
It doesn’t seem like that long ago that if you wanted to have a movie night, your choices were Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, or some other local variant of the basic video store concept. Lines were long, prices and late fees were steep, and the whole experience was not very convenient.

Fast-forward to today, and the home video market is fragmented like never before. You can pick up a cheap (or free!) movie from your local Redbox, you can have a disc delivered to your door or streamed to your Xbox, Apple TV or other device from Netflix, you can get thousands of movies instantly through VOD services, and the list goes on.

Technology
Remember “be kind, rewind”? Those days are long gone, thanks to DVD, Blu-ray and downloads/streaming. Today’s technology gives us more control over our viewing experience than ever before, and higher definition formats let us watch our favorite films in shocking clarity and detail. Every time I watch a Blu-ray in surround sound on my HDTV, I’m grateful to be able to enjoy a 21st century viewing experience.

Great Movies
Hollywood has definitely turned out more than its fair share of clunkers, and the ratio of wheat/chaff  definitely seems to be favoring the latter lately. Even so, there are hundreds of absolutely fantastic titles out there that span the decades, and many of them can be had or rented for a few dollars.

My eclectic collection runs from Casablanca to A Hard Day’s Night to the Godfather movies to Saving Private Ryan to Inception, which I’ll soon have to make room on my shelf for. Great movies are definitely high on my “thankful” list.

Free Codes
They’re not quite as common as they used to be, but between the ones we still have and all of the promotional offers with retailers, Redbox has provided me with many a free movie night.

The Insiders
Finally, we wanted to express our gratitude for the users of this site. It wouldn’t exist without your visits and support, and we appreciate your comments, insights and valuable input. Thanks for helping make Inside Redbox the web’s number one “unofficial” Redbox community.

I had stopped renting movies regularly until Redbox machines began popping up back in ’07. Now I rent like crazy from RB, BlueBox, Family Video, and Netflix and Blockbuster By Mail.
Also, “Inception” is a Warner movie, so it looks like i’ll have to head to BB to get it on day one. If you’re a BB By Mail subscriber, you can return your By Mail movie and get it for $1.99 for a five day new release rental(Which works out great on embargoed titles!). Not bad if you ask me(Although their By Mail service isn’t as fast as Netflix…NF is light years ahead of BB BM on speed of sending out DVDs…you might get one DVD a week from BB but three a week from NF).
