Another year has come to a close. As we roll into 2019, it’s time to take a quick look back at some of our favorite flicks that came out last year. Overall, 2018 was a fair-to-middling year of movies. We had a few surprise hits like A Quiet Place, and a few big disappointments like Robin Hood. The good news is that moviegoers showed Hollywood that they’re still willing to leave the comfort of their homes and big screen TVs to hit the cinema: box office receipts had a very healthy year in 2018.

Now, let’s get to it. In no particular order, here are our favorite films of the year. Once you’ve read through the list, hit the comments and tell us if your favorite movies matched up with ours.

A Quiet Place
Who knew that The Office’s John Krazinski was so multitalented? He knocked it out of the park with this family-focused entry in the horror genre. Casting Emily Blunt (his offscreen wife) as his onscreen wife was also an inspired bit of nepotism.

Roma
Alfonso Cuaron can do no wrong, seemingly. He’s taken us to Hogwarts, an apocalyptic future, and the depths of space in a stylish and compelling way. Now he takes us back to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City. Beautifully shot in black and white, Roma is quietly moving and worth subscribing to Netflix for a month just to view it.

Paddington 2
A kiddie movie that has no right to be as good or improve upon the original as much as it did. Special kudos to Hugh Grant for his delightfully smarmy turn as the film’s villain. Fun for kids of all ages.

BlacKkKlansman
Just when everyone had written off Spike Lee as an outspoken has-been, he comes back with this compelling film based on a true story about two police officers in the 70s. You may love it, you may hate it, but you can’t ignore it or not have it make you think.

Mission Impossible: Fallout
Quick, name some action movie series that keep getting better as they hit their sixth(!) installment. Exactly. Tom Cruise and company continue to up the ante in the latest MI movie, which once again features the ageless wonder performing most of his own stunts with a minimum of CGI. Worth the price of admission just for the one-take skydiving sequence over Paris.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
The cinema world needs the Cohen brothers, and they have obliged us with this quirky western anthology created for Netflix. I could watch the first sequence, featuring Tim Blake Nelson’s titular Buster Scruggs, over and over again. If you’re not a Cohen fan, this flick won’t convert you. But if you can wrap your head around their darkly comic (and sometimes just dark) sensibilities and dialogue, Buster Scruggs is a treat.

Isle of Dogs
Another one of my favorite quirky filmmakers returned this year: Wes Anderson. This new entry in his oeuvre is stop-motion perfection, telling the tale of a group of Japanese dogs exiled to a trash island and trying to help a lost little boy return home. It hits all the right Anderson-ian notes with its humor, dialogue, pacing, framing, and color palette.

Black Panther
One of the best superhero movies ever, with a lot of important things to say. Throw in possibly the best and most relatable villain in the Marvel pantheon, and you’ve got a recipe for a billion-dollar success that deserved its accolades and attendance.

The Death of Stalin
Were you asking for a dark political comedy about the last years of the brutal Soviet dictator? Neither was I, but here we are. Impeccably written and acted, Stalin is sometimes shocking, sometimes slapstick, and always entertaining. A dark, dark horse, indeed.

First Man
A fascinating look at the man whose name would become synonymous with the success of the American Apollo program. Ryan Gosling is on point, as usual, and absolutely owns his soft-spoken but steely eyed character in this film Bravura flight sequences just top it all off. We know how the story ends, but that doesn’t take away from the thrill when it happens.
