imagesAs hard as it is to imagine now, there was once an idyllic time when superhero movies were considered box office poison and assiduously avoided by studios. My how the times have changed.

Thor: The Dark World,  the latest in a looong line of superhero films, hammers its way into theaters this weekend. It’s the sequel to both last year’s The Avengers and Thor’s first solo outing two summers ago. This summer, we also experienced a reboot of the Superman franchise with Man of Steel and Hugh Jackman’s SIXTH appearance as the hirsute Logan in The Wolverine. Wolvie won’t be out of theaters long, as a new X-Men movie is coming next summer, and ANOTHER Wolverine solo movie has just been announced.

Don’t forget about Iron Man 3 from this last May and the second Captain America solo movie slotted for the spring. After that we can look forward to Guardians of the Galaxy, another Avengers movie, Ant-Man, a Superman vs. Batman flick, and many more. The last few years have also seen three Batman films, the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, etc.

The list of tight-wearing, justice-dealing heroes parading across the big screen in the last few years is virtually endless.

Now don’t get me wrong—I’m not opposed to superhero movies and have really enjoyed a few (X2, The Dark Knight, and the first Iron Man movie, among others.) It’s just the sheer volume of them coming our way that gives me a bit of super-fatigue.

Why are we living in an age when there’s always at least one caped crusader gracing the big screen at any given time? The answer, of course, is money. The Marvel series of superhero movies alone has raked in billions. Moviegoers, especially international audiences, have thus far demonstrated an endless thirst for these sorts of movies. And risk-averse Hollywood has churned them out by the bucketload.

So here are the big questions: how long before this superhero movie fad inevitably runs its course and Hollywood moves on to the “next big thing?

” Are you experiencing superhero fatigue, or are you standing in line at each premiere clutching your popcorn in one hand and your costume in the other?

Yes at some point soon there’s going to be a breaking point. Hollywood studios are all famous for being copycats.

Congratulation, Shane, on some rare original content (your editorial). Those are always welcome.

Hate most of them. Blech. They almost all have the same cookie cutter storyline. It doesn’t feel like film, it feels like a comic book.

No. I want more Man of Steel movies. I bought a ton of the posters and licensed items with the logo

I was tired of them the moment they started, and it’s been downhill since then. With the exception of the Dark Knight films, I find them very boring, and while I can largely avoid them, I occasionally get one of them from Netflix, and rarely watch them to their conclusion.

It’s a fad and they will overload the market. Especially as they use lesser-known characters like Ant Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Please keep them coming. They are finally doing something right when it comes to super hero movies.

    Tired of superhero movies? Yes.
    And vampire movies.
    And zombie movies.
    And sword and sorcery movies.
    And fantasy movies.

    Anybody seen Humphrey Bogart lately?
