Verizon’s CFO, Fran Shammo, let slip at in remarks at a technology conference that the service may just be cheaper than competing offerings.

In his remarks, Shammo said that the service, which is to launch in August, is not really intended to expand Verizon’s FiOS footprint:

“This is going after some FiOS customers, but this is really meant for the launch across the United States to the Redbox population and their 30 million customers,”

This intention would more likely pit the service against Netflix and other streaming providers. Shammo went on to say that the service will be based on Verizon’s new proprietary digital distribution platform: Verizon Digital Media Services (VDMS).

Said Shammo:

“Utilizing that backbone, we’re able to deliver content at a much cheaper rate than people out there today,”

How cheap is “much cheaper” and who exactly is Shammo referring to as “people out there?” Hit the comments and let us know what you think.

    Interesting,

Think about it, by joining with RedBox, it gives Verizon access to even more potential customers for their online services, whether FIOS or DSL, but the fact remains, the bigger problem is bandwidth limitations. If they introduce a lower cost option as mentioned, isn’t it interesting that this supposed leak came out the same day Verizon announced they will discontinue unlimited data plans, and how much will they cost in the future? They will raiser prices on data plans, this you can count on.

Itis it going to be a subscription based like netflix or hulu or by movie like vudu?? And if they put new releases at two dollars they’ll dominate the streaming rental service
