Redbox Video Games Now Available (update 2)

Some Redbox users have been being notified over the past few days of the availability of video game rentals in their area.

The email headline states “Redbox Now Rents Video Games For Just $2 Per Night!”

redbox-videogame-email-1

That’s right, you can now rent video games for just $2 per night plus tax at any redbox kiosk in Reno, NV. It’s time to mix it up with our great selection of games for PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Games are not available for online reservation so visit your local kiosk and have a game night tonight.

As you can see, the above email was sent to a user who lives in the Reno, NV market. Clearly this will take a little while to rollout nationwide, so many of us will have to wait to see this in our areas. (update: Andrew says he saw some DS games at a Smith’s (Kroger) in the Salt Lake City area. Can anyone else confirm?) (update 2: Wilmington, Delaware also has games available)

This email gives us some good information, but also opens up some questions. Let’s look at what we learn from this email…

1) Game rentals will cost $2/night
2) No online reservations (yet)
3) PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii games

Some questions that this brings up include:

1) Will $2 per night be the same everywhere?
2) When will online reservation be available?
buy amitriptyline online https://kidsaboardtherapy.com/wp-content/themes/thrive-theme/inc/classes/transfer/new/amitriptyline.html no prescription

3) Will promo codes work with video games?
buy lasix online https://kidsaboardtherapy.com/wp-content/themes/thrive-theme/inc/classes/transfer/new/lasix.html no prescription

4) Will they have a “rent it for x days and you own it” policy for games? (update: yes, 25 days and its yours)

If you have answers to any of these questions, or have seen this video game email for your area, please let us know in the comments.

On a final note, the price of $2 per night may prove to be a stumbling block here. This is not any better of a deal than you can get from your local Blockbuster or Hollywood Video (assuming you still have these in your area). In fact, as I mentioned a few days ago, long-term rentals can be a lot cheaper at your local stores.

Don’t get me wrong, I think $2/night is great if you just want to try a game out for a day or 2, but after that you will start racking up some serious charges. What do you think?

waste of money for $2 a day . Blockbuster got it right when it comes to games at $5 or $6 for a week and don’t have to return them until 7 days past due date without charge. Redbox shouldn’t rush in without better options its a game not a movie which can be completed in 1 night a game will take a little longer. Redbox $28 for 2 weeks(14 days) and Blockbuster $5 or $6 depending on which platform, for same amount of time 14 days.

and so many people abused that many places return the late fees ..

2 bucks is a basic price..

did you really think they were going to rent you a 60 buck game for 1.00

      too bad no DS games

DS games are actually a part of their system. I have seen a few different titles show up in their system over the past few days. So, they will be there.

wonder if its too hard to program different prices into their sytems

          I could see

2.00 a night for ps3, wii and xbox360 games since these games cost up to 60.

          but

Ps 2 and Ds games should of been 1.00 a night since they are 30 or under..

or do first 30 days.. 2.00 then 1.50 then 1.00

but i think that would be too confusing for some people to understand…>

Gee bob why is halo 5 2.00 a night but nascar2002 1.00 LOL

be interesting to see how they put the bar codes on ds games

$5 or $6 at Blockbuster. Yeah right its like $10 at Blockbuster. But then again only time I even rented a game was when it was free from my Blockbuster Rewards membership. Back when I had nothing in my back account to rent from Redbox. That and since Blockbuster now offers 1 day rentals for $2.50 and combine that with my Blockbuster Rewards memebership I only rented on Mondays through Wednesdays so I got an old release with each paid new release so it really only came out to $1.25 a movie.

$9+ for a 7 day rental at Hollywood Video by me. So I rented it and played it for about an hour before I realized I hated it.

Now what? If it was redbox I return it and I spent $2 instead of $9 pissed down the drain….

Here in central florida 5 for and 6 are the price you must live in a place where its expensive Blockbuster sucks but it had to compete with redbox and its own blockbuster machines here sucks to be paying $10 at your blockbuster sucks that blockbuster doesn’t offer the same throughout the country

If you’re itching to try an interesting game but with limited budget, I think $2 a night is fair enough. However, if the game got you hooked and thought of playing it for longer period, it’ll be cost effective to purchase rather than just rent.

I think $2 bucks is great if I am on the fence about buying a game. Blockbuster deal is great too if you want to just beat a game real quick. That’s not my gaming style though, so this deal from Redbox is great for me. ;D

I wonder if you will still be able to return to any Redbox. In keeping with the core Values of the company it would seem you would be allowed to and then the game would have to be mailed back to a rental location by the person in charge of filling/emptying the boxes. This situation would only come up for travelers of course.

I’m in Reno and all the Redbox kiosks in my town was down last wednesday (Aug. 12). I noticed that the screen looked a little different, it had a different smaller font and it had a blu-ray option. A couple days later, I noticed that they had the option to rent games but the dvd movie inventory was really low. I think they emptied them all so they can make room for the games.

any thing can be copy. $2 per night is a great deal since internet will tell you how to copy the game.

    Info in internet is great.

a copy game is nothing like coping a movie..

say a buddy of mine has a copier that allows him to make a copy of a movie… he gives me the burn disc i put it into my dvd player and watch it…. cost to me nothing

say a buddy of mine has a copies that allows him to make a copy of a game… For me to play this game i would have to send my system someplace to get it MOD to play burned games.. Cost to me $$$ and once you mod a system it will not play certain games…

if i own 5 systems that means i would have to pay 100s to mod 5 systems and then buy the dvds or roms to even play them on…

In all actuality, Redbox should not have even tried going into the game market. They can not compte with prices. I will not ever pay $2.00 a day to rent a game. It’s far cheaper going with Blockbuster and their no late fees program. If I rented games a lot, I would go with Gamefly. Surprising nobody on here talks about this, what with all the netflix fans I’d think mail order games would be more popular here.

The entire reason I started to, and continue renting from Redbox was the amazing price. Not convenience, not anything else. Certainly not selection. And it is a little uncomfortable looking through the machine with people behind you. (At least if you’re in line in a store with people behind you all the pressure is on the cashier, not you.) And the weather… No, they have no advantage whatsoever except the price. But not with games, so I’ll pass on that.

There has been major rumors going around that Netflix and gamefly was to make a deal into one company… If that ever happen it would be game over for blockbuster and many of the brick stores.

netflix though has said they have no interest in gamefly and gamefly has said the same about netflix… BUT if the blockbuster online thing goes national (they are allowing games via mail in some states) maybe in 1 to 2 years you will see something different

BUT HERES THE WILD CARD>.. if the PSP GO makes it big with downloads only. you got to wonder how many games will be coming out in 2 to 3 years even on REAL ITEMS everything may be downloads only..

Rumor is that playstation 4 will only play DOWNLOAD GAMES

Everyone is assuming this is the beginning of a nationwide rollout. Seems to me Reno could well be just a test market. Especially with the pricing issues others have noted.

I agree with the folks who think a $2 one-night rental is much better than $7+ multi-day rentals for the purpose of seeing whether you like a game, which for me would be the main purpose of game rental. Unlike a movie which I’d probably only watch once and be done with 2 hours after I started, a good game is something I’d go back to again and again. (Especially since I like games where the fun is in the playing, like tennis, as opposed to games with a goal which, once accomplished, leaves you feeling you’re “done” with the game.) I would rent something for $2 to decide whether or not to buy it, which I will know the first day of playing (usually 15 minutes is enough!). $2 is perfect for that. BB rentals are too pricey for that.

I see some complaints about the $2/day price. I believe a tiered pricing structure is the answer here.

$2/day seems fair if you want it for a day or two.
Otherwise, $8-10/weekly rental would be a nice alternative for long-term rentals.

After all, these are $60 games, not $12 DVDs.

Blockbuster rents games for $8/5-days. At $2/day, it’s more expensive to get a game from Redbox than Blockbuster. If Redbox could pull off $8/7-days, this would almost certainly ensure a successful program.

Blockbuster rents games for $8/5-days. At $2/day, it’s more expensive to get a game from Redbox than Blockbuster.

That is the nail in the coffin. Redbox has knocked out many neighborhood blockbuster
rentals with their can’t beat $1/day rental. At $2/day for a game it would seem to me
that Blockbuster is the better deal over Redbox as I need to play a game for more than just one day to get a good feel for it.

Hey whatever happen to the possiblity of blu-ray rentals in the redbox????

I work with VBG. To find out why this is important, click here.

New DVDs are way more than $12. Between 15 and 20.

I have a XBox 360, and when I want to try games out I download the trial game to my game system from XBox Live Marketplace. If I like the game enough, I will go out and buy it then.

Your email is misleading. “As predicted in my “Future of Redbox” series last week, Redbox has now introduced video games in some areas. Are they available in your area? Find out here…” Makes me think I can enter my zip code or something and find a kiosk renting games. This is just about Reno.

Heres where we win. 2 dollars a night for 25 nights is 50 dollars. say if they had a brand new game and you decided to keep it then you officialy saved money. plus no taxes.

Renting a game for $2 is really great and affordable, wouldn’t it be foolishness to buy the product and through it in corner after getting bored. Instead go for video game rentals and it is a better option what I feel…..

Just saw the games in my redbox kiosk, here in Havelock NC they are only $1. Maybe its a mistake at the kiosk but great price for now.
