Redbox Updates Their Billing System Again

Redbox has again modified the way their billing system works…

Now, when you rent a DVD, you are immediately charged $1 for the first day’s rental. Then, if you return it by 9pm the next day, you are not billed again.

If you keep the DVD for more than one day, you will be billed for the extra days when it is returned.

They say that they did this “to reduce temporary holds on your credit or debit card and make it easier for you to track changes.”

I am pretty sure they will still use temporary holds when a promo code is used, however, so nothing will be changing there.

You can read the full announcement on the Redbox website.

Hopefully this will speed up the process so I can keep better track of my billing charges ive recieved emails from redbox four days after ive returned dvds the it almost seems like i,m double billed because im seeing initial billing when i rent then i,m seeing another billing after the return….. from my bank. After pending charges.

Maybe now they’ll work on all the error messages you get when you try to reserve new releases after midnight.

I really think this code thing is one big scam. Here is why: When you enter your code the computer places a $10 charge on your account. Even after you return the movie within 24 hours they hang on to your money for 10 or more days. They make millions of dollars of interest off of your money they hold for far too many days. Clever for them….not such a good thing for us. THE RICH GET RICHER OFF OF US………………

i read redbox terms of use and you are correct they do charge this fee, but i guess all rental kiosk do this after all do you really think they were making money off a dollar rental fee and pay for store space, still a good deal if you have credit card anyway

Redbox doesn’t actually get the money. When you use a credit or debit card anywhere (not just Redbox), there is a hold placed on the money by your bank, in anticipation of the charge coming in. If/when the charge actually goes through, the money is then taken (for a debit card) or the amount is added to your balance due (for a credit card). If the charge does not actually go through, the hold is removed after a few days. The hold does affect your available balance, but the merchant (in this case, Redbox) doesn’t see any of it until the transaction is actually finalized. If you return the movie before any money is actually due, Redbox never actually sees a penny from your account.
