Why is The Great Debaters DVD not available in RedBox machines?
The Great Debaters is distributed/(developed & produced) exclusively by the Weinstein Company (Weinstein Brothers) http://www.imdb.com/company/co0150452/ – they have exclusive relationships with Blockbuster for rental purposes (although I did rent a copy through Netflix). Therefore, you will never see a Weinstein property in a Redbox for rent. Thanks for playin’!
I don’t understand how an exclusive rental agreement is enforceable. I can understand that they may give some kind of quantity price break to Blockbuster, but they can’t legally keep anyone else from renting something.
It’s called ‘first sale doctrine’.
I am not saying that the decision will not be challenged. I believe that it is being challenged. Never the less, it exists:

Netflix is purchasing the titles at SAMS or Wal-Mart or somewhere and then renting them. But, everyone is excluded from purchasing the Weinstein titles from 3rd party distributors, such as Ingram and VPD, except Blockbuster – not very fair, but reality.
