Redbox to Test Higher Blu-ray Prices

As part of their earnings announcement yesterday, Redbox also mentioned more about their Blu-ray roll out. They have decided they would test Blu-ray rentals at higher prices, but they haven’t decided what those prices would be.

Hopefully they will start releasing Blu-ray in more locations, as I have not seen any here in Utah yet.

Have you seen Blu-ray where you are?

Also, how much do you think is a fair price for Redbox to charge for Blu-ray rentals? How much would you be willing to pay? Personally, I think $1.50 would be a great price point. I would definitely pay that. Much higher than that and I may think twice about it. How about you?

    $2 makes sense to me.

I wouldn’t mind paying $2. Right now we are only using Redbox once or twice a month, but that would easily be a week once BluRay is rolled out.

    The only Blu-Ray I have seen at a local Kiosk near 54911 has been Spider-Man 3 (http://www.redbox.com/Titles/AvailableTitles.aspx?kioskid=21430#Detail&page=1&sort=2&titleId=1092&pageSize=-1&genreId=-1)

As for pricing $2 or less would awesome…

there seems no easy way to search for them.

heck, I found SP3 in a couple of locations near me by browsing under Action & Adventure – however nothing came when searching by title…

Why would bluray need to be more expensive? Keep the price the same.

They have it here in Florida… at least in my county (Brevard).

Oh no, higher price talking. Price is the main reason I use Redbox, take that away and we got nothing. I really don’t want to see a higher price. I might be able to handle $1.50, but would still feel cheated. I would never pay more than $2 in any case for a Blu-ray rental. At that price I would also limit myself to titles I am pretty sure I would like. I wouldn’t try any of those generic looking titles.

      @MyBlueNovember:

I’m pretty sure those generic looking titles aren’t going to be on Blu-ray, anyway, so no problem there.

Redbox definitely needs a slightly higher price on Blu-ray, at least for now. If you rent a Blu-ray now and never return it, it only costs you $25, which in many cases is less than the disc costs to buy at the store. Ultimately Blu-ray prices are going to level out, but until then I understand the need to have a slightly higher price. I really think $1.50/day is fair. $2/day gets expensive fast, especially if you keep the disc 3 days or more.

Our local Blockbuster rents Blu-Ray for 0.99 a night so if Red Box wants to charge more than $1, I will be going to Blockbuster again (sigh).

If they raise the price, they need to provide more service and titles. Open up reservations and review of titles in the redboxes online. If they keep this the same way, I will not rent anymore. It is already impossible since you have to hunt for Blu-rays by visiting each machine.

I thing $1.50 is a fair price to rent Blueray movies at Redbox. Higher than that I will think twice before renting.

Our local Walmart in Florida carries blu ray movies but they are never in, always checked out. The person above that said her blockbuster carries blu ray movies for .99, maybe for real old ones but not for new titles. I personally don’t believe it, our blockbuster does not. $1.50 is a fair price if they have to increase the price.

Actually ALL game and DVD (Blu-Ray and regular) rentals at our local Blockbuster are $0.99 a night, including new releases. Unfortunately, we have recently discovered that meant a drastic reduction in store hours though as well. You do not have to believe me, but like most businesses, Blockbuster doe what it has to stay competitive. We have other video stores in the area that rent for similar prices, so in order for Blockbuster to compete, they charge $0.99/night.

I use RedBox a couple times a week. I almost always use a coupon code. If I were paying, I would be happy to pay $1 since the selection is poor and good movies are often out of stock. Additionally, the site says something is in stock, you reserve it, and it isn’t in stock. So more of a reason that this is good for free or $1.

If you want to start charging more:

    1) Have more movies that people want to watch
    2) Have more of them
    3) Get a system that works properly
    4) Work on your GUI. People are VERY stupid, and they are easily confused. I know it isn’t fair to RB, but dumb-it-down more — so these idiots get done faster and I can do what I need to do.

What level do they need to drop it to?

You pick your movie, then you checkout. I have seen people have problems with swiping their card but there’s not much you can do about that except to switch to “pay pass”.

People spend the most time picking their movies, and that’s because they can’t make up their mind. They should have gone online and picked what they wanted before they went to the box, but maybe they don’t have inet access, or are the “shopper” mentality and want to shop around the box before buying. Nothing a GUI can do.

Redbox could put a screen mounted in front of the lighted movie display that is just for browsing at the more busy locations but for business it would be better to just put in another whole box. How many people walk away because there’s a line?

And by what you said, you are too slow when you reserve a movie online, if you take too much time someone else can reserve it while you are trying to make your decision. We don’t have to wait for you either.

San Diego has Blue-Ray. Usually the only good title that comes out every week. They’ve been around since 1/09. They go quick so you have to get them in the am. How bout they charge $2 off the bat then $1 every night after.

My redbox in Tampa FL has Blu ray movies
and it’s the same price as a DVD.
But you can’t see them online or reserve them online yet.

    Cool….

I’d gladly pay $1.50 or less. $2 per night is pushing it when Blockbuster is only $4.80 for a week at least in Utah. I don’t see why they need to raise the price much at all for blu-ray. It seems more likely that a blu-ray rental would be $1.10 or 1.25 per day.

We have blu-ray in San Diego, as another said.
The main bummer about it is that you can’t reserve titles in blu-ray with the online rental service. I emailed them about that, doesn’t seem like it would be that hard, but they said something about not being able to do that and still working on it. Oh well.

Sucks to reserve a movie, go to pick it up and see that the blu-ray version is available.

talked with a Redbox employee installing an additional kiosk at my local Farm Fresh…asked about BluRay…she said won’t be available in our market, Virginia Beach,….bummer…

I wrote them an e-mail just asking for Blu-ray in my area. My mom and I didn’t want to wait any longer and signed up for a month for one of those 2 out at a time specials @ Blockbuster just to see some stuff in this format. We are gonna use Redbox for codes and stuff not out in the format for now, but they have gotta catch up soon!

The BR rental should be at $1. They need to roll out more BR Discs and make info available on the website as well. I would like to see what is available before I drive to red box.
