Inside Redbox is the #1 "Unofficial" Redbox Online Community for Redbox Codes, News and more. Inside Redbox is not affiliated with Redbox Automated Retail, LLC.

As you may have noticed on the first Monday of November, is changing the way the first Monday promo codes work. In the past, they sent out the same code to everyone signed up for their SMS alerts, encouraging users to “share with friends”. That is all changing now.

In a recent email, Redbox has now said the codes they will be sending out to its SMS network will be “one-time use” codes, meaning no more sharing with friends. I am guessing Redbox is doing this to quell the users who abuse the system, using the code on as many as 10 credit cards to get as many free rentals as possible.

From the redbox email:

As a loyal redbox customer, we want to make sure you know about an upcoming change to our Monthly Movie Monday program. Beginning Monday, December 7, the Monthly Movie Monday promo code will be distributed exclusively via text message to customers signed up to the redbox SMS Network.

All codes will be unique and can only be redeemed once. If you get your code from a friend, online or in an email, the code may NOT work.

There have been some reports by our visitors that Redbox will still create a code the can be used multiple times, but will make it harder to find. Of course, we here are Inside Redbox are on the case for you, so if this rumor is true, we will be sure to post the code here for all.

In addition, there have been quite a few other codes that have been working for all lately. Visit the Redbox Codes page often (and signup for our “Insider Updates” newsletter) to stay up-to-date on the latest codes.

Please let us (and Redbox) know what you think. Will this new way of doing things backfire and hurt Redbox, or will it just hurt the users who are abusing the service and help Redbox stay in the black? Share your thoughts in the comments.

I got good news. After calling Redbox a third time they were able to tell my why I’m not able to rent from them. For some reason they said they tried charging my account for a movie. They had said that since the charge didn’t go through that it unactivated my account. The odd thing is I know I had returned the movie and they said that for some reason it showed up as being checked out for 45 days. So after the 25 days they tried to charge my account and couldn’t. The thing is I told them I know I hard returned it no longer then 4 or 5 days after I got it because that’s the longest I’ve ever kept a movie. Truth is the longest I’ve ever kept a movie has been 2 days. So they looked into it and saw that other people had checked out the same movie. So I asked if they could reactivate my account they spoke to there supervisor and said since I have had a long history with Redbox with over 100 rentals they would reactivate my account. So I should be able to rent from Redbox in a couple more days. Sucks because Netflix hasn’t been sending me most of the new releases even though I’ve had the in que for weeks or months in advanced.

Just to chime in, Netflix if you absolutely used it to it’s maximum (with regard to DVD’s) still costs about $ .60 per. Now that means 1 day to watch 3 movies and back in the mail the next day, every day for 1 month straight. Otherwise the per day/ per movie cost goes way up! Not to mention the predominance of renters are looking for the absolute newest movies, which from what I understand Neflix is having a hard time filling those orders.

I think this stinks… we do not have texting on our cell plan. They need to find an alt way to reach those customers who do not utilize texting, maybe e-mail since it is attached to my online account with them.

I have a limited text plan for my phone, but rarely, if ever, rent a movie on a Monday. I don’t have time to watch it before needing to return it on Tuesday. In fact, I wouldn’t have time to watch it until the weekend. I have seen the codes flying around, but never used one.

It’s all about collecting usable information. Most cell phones are unlisted numbers. And with one time use codes, cell phone numbers can be linked to names, credit card info. and addresses. This is information that is highly valued.

I’m wondering now if maybe i should not have given my number.. i try to keep it as private as possible to avoid junk calls but hopefully redbox won’t sell that info – altho i admit it’s possible..

i get so many free movies from redbox that i have seen everything in the box that is of ANY value at all! i didnt even use todays code they sent me because thanks to you all,
the codes snsv26 and gants9 work for each of my xxx credit cards and i was able to get the 6 movies i wanted and didnt even try to get the yyy more dvds i could have gotten.
    seen everything.
so who needs netflix or blockbuster.
the library fills in for older moves when i find the time
and then there is the 150 i have in a stack here i havent even watched
    yet.

so thank you for the codes and to give something back …

oh by the way, i called redbox today. they told me they were changing the code to one time use codes on mondays. that you already know. but the reson they are doing it,
is so that the marketing people can determine how many people use there cell phone codes on monday rather than just rely on friends to get codes. if the codes are unique and good for one day only, how many people actually use them???

    good luck to them.

I don’t have texting for my phone so I guess I don’t use Redbox anymore. It’s not that big of a deal anyway since Redbox doesn’t have many of the movies that come out and around here, they’re always a day late. Netflix works out great for me at 2 at a time so for $14/month, I get 16 movies on average and I don’t have to make two 16 mile round trips to get a movie at the nearest Redbox. For those of you who think that the $1 movie is still a great deal, watch out because they are raising it to $2 from what I’ve heard. So long Redbox…………

Free product is a great way to break into a market and get Brand recognition, but I’ve never understood why redbox continues to give out free rental codes. If it were me, I would have eliminated them a long time ago. Their price structure is already sufficiently attractive – their strategic presence in McDonalds and Walmart give them exposure (location location location). Seems to me that they could do away with free rentals.

Redbox was going to remove the codes altogether but they desided to do it once a month instead of once a week. Which is enough in my opinion. Just be glad they are still doing the codes. One day it will end.

I actually quit using Redbox because every time I went they never had the movie I wanted or because the machine was outside and it was soooooo cold out, the screen didn’t work. Another thing I’ve noticed is if the sun is directly on the screen it doesn’t work either. I gave up and started to use Blockbuster for $13.99 a month 2DVD’s at a time. I get all the new releases without an issue and I don’t have to fight a screen. I will say though, I have used Redbox in the past and NEVER paid for a movie due to all the codes that were flying around. I think eventually we’re gonna see Redbox fold because they just don’t carry enough good movies.

      Fascinating.
It is interesting to see how different customer see things.
One of my biggest complaints about Brick ‘n’ Mortar stores is that I can’t reserve a movie that I want, but have to go in to rent it. If I really want a hot new release for Saturday evenin, I either have to go there on Tuesday and grab it or make often fruitless trips to my local Blockbuster on Saturday hoping that my visit coincides with somebody returning it. The routine went something like this. “Do you have UP in?”. Cashier, “Sorry dude, there all out, but we are expecting some in this evening.” ME, “Well could you check the return box to see if anybody dropped one in?” Cashier, “I just checked a few moments ago”. So then I walk around the store to see if there is anything that I am willing to settle for. Sometimes I find something, sometimes I don’t, but if I do, I end up with a movie that I didn’t really “want” – it wasn’t on my list. Then, as I go to check out, ME:”did you get any copies of UP while I was wasting my time wandering around your store?” Cashier, “No dude, you’ll have to check back later.”

Conversely, I’ve never had a problem getting a new release that has been distributed to Redbox. Before I leave the house, I get online, check redboxes in my general vicinity an find out whether any of the several locations (there are like 24 conveniently located kiosks within 10 miles) has it in stock. if I find one that does, I reserve it with the convenient click of a mouse and KNOW it will be there when I get around to going there (I’ve rented well over 200 movies this way during the past two years, and have never had a problem). The only glitch is that once, the machine tried, but jammed and couldn’t dispense my video. A call to Redbox and I had two free codes in consideration.

The only problem with redbox that I can see is is that they do have limited inventory and mostly stock thing that have only been out for a few months. If I want a classic movie, Redbox is usually not an option.

But I find Redbox’s online reservation system, convenient locations and pricepoint to largely satisfy my most important needs. Sorry that it hasn’t worked as well for you.

netflix, 3 at a time, 9 per week max. you must get dvds they day they arrive back in a
us postal box by 5pm that day. that means you rip them to computer to time shift them, 15 minutes each disk. then you drive back to post office by 5 pm.
    some cities have 8pm pickups.

9 per week works as long as there are no postal holidays in the week.

so max is 36 per month – 6 for holidays or 30 a month.

thats the best deal, next to free movies from redbox.
dont forget to factor in gas prices to get to post office 3 time per week.

putting movies in mail box next day … means 6 movies per week max
or 24 a month, holidays are less an isuue.

redbox at $1 a night is expensive since gas costs to and from redbox 2 times
adds up big. only way to make that work again is to get 3 or more ..
rip to your computer to time shift them again.

    good luck!

Redbox charged me $52 for a game not returned. I am an honest citizen and returned it. They credited half of it back and said they couldn’t find evidence that it was returned. I have decided to only use redbox for the code, but refuse to give them further information so that they can text a code. I will now use netflix, you can rent through mail or online with Xbox Live. I am ok with that and the movie selection is MUCH better. Thanks Redbox for rating a game higher than a customer!

The shift to SMS leaves those who don’t text without access to full RedBox services. Plus, SMS costs me, whereas email is free; o this shift is unattractive to me, and it makes me wonder what RedBox is up to. Why do they prefer SMS over email? There must be some advantage for them, something extra they’re trying to get from me, but they’re not being transparent about what that is. Makes me distrust the company.

I am very unhappy with this new policy. My cell phone company recently changed my texting plan from $.10 per text message to $1.00 per text message. So much for Redbox – guess I’ll use a competitor’s kiosk.

I e-mailed Redbox as soon as the original notice of this new policy went out, and the answer I got back was pretty much just “tough.”

I am not happy. It’s one thing to get rid of the codes altogether; It’s another to be discriminatory in how you hand them out.

Ever since Redbox switched to only one free Monday a month, my husband and I have discovered renting movies at our local library for free. 5 movies out at a time, can keep them for seven days! Who needs Redbox anymore? We used to pay to rent from Redbox every once in a while, but after they switched to once-a-month Monday, we checked out alternatives and we probably won’t be renting from Redbox anymore except on very rare occasions.

we get 20 movies at a time from our library and we just request them
online and they bring them to the library 2 miles away! cant beat that!

Can’t beat the library, $1 for 3 nights and kids movies are free. And the money supports the library. It’s a win – win.

redbox doesn’t have to post a code at all. its only $1 for pete sake! i have noticed fewer new releases and an increase of oldy but goody movies- i don’t rent the old ones b/c if its a ‘goody’ i already have it myself at home anyway–i hope redbox sticks around and doesn’t get beat out by blockbusters new ‘boxes’. it is true…the last few times i tried to use a code, they didn’t work, but if they had something i really wanted, i rented it anyway-

i’m beginning to feel this way too.. the free code is becoming too difficult to be worth it (in my opinion anyway).. plus i signed up for new sms code plan thing but have received nothing yet today and it’s already almost 3pm) plus you’re right it’s a just a buck.. that’s so cheap these days, it’s really unbeatable..

i won’t be giving my cell phone # for a free code though—way too much info sharing amongst companies these days–i pay per text so its not worth the $1 savings in the long run-

I think it sucks that I can’t forward the code on to my friends.
First, they knock down the promo code to only once a month, then limit it even further. Next they’ll probably just cut it off completely.
Which, I guess is okay since there is never anything to rent anyway. The new releases are always sold out and most of the movies are garbage.
I think I’m switching back to Hollywood Video or something else.

I totally agree with some of you. I dont have text messaging and therefore I cant receive any codes. However I do agree that redbox could possibly lose a lot of $$$ due to people abusing the system. Im might have used the code for 2 credit cards….but not 10! Who seriously watches that many movies within 24 hours.

If you ask me its people illegally ripping these movies that are using 10 different credit cards!

This thread was established for people to express views on a new Redbox policy, whether it be pro or con. If the majority find it to be a poor change, that should be noted … not necessarily lambasted as “whining.”

I don’t have text messaging service on my phone, so I’ll miss out on the free codes. That’s disappointing, in a small but honest way. I didn’t abuse the system, but the abuse of others apparently fed the decision for this change. That’s also disappointing, in a small but honest way.

It’s not the end of the world. It’s too bad, is all. It does impact the way Redbox is viewed among people who’ve been their biggest champions.

I have texting and signed up a long time ago for the code to be text to me. I still have never received a code. I signed up again and again nothing has been text to me. A couple of other people I know have had the same results as me. Maybe they will only text to certain cell phone companies. I have unlimited texing. I’m with Sprint, and they said there is nothing on my phone blocking it either. Who knows?! I hope everyone else is getting their codes. But a least it is still cheaper and closer for me to rent with redbox than it is to go to other movie rental places. So I still win in the long run.

just a reply to the note about redbox changing to texting codes only. i did phone redbox to complain about the prejudice of this new way.

i, probably only one in the world, have no cellphone. so that means i get no code. this is so unfair, and i told them my opinion. the agent said he would convey my opinion to higher up. (not holding my breath)

but i just felt it is unfair, and needed to tell redbox that.

sure i shared with my 2 daughters, but their emails always said we could share.

ok, im done. gotta learn to live with it. maybe Blockbuster Express will open in my area. :)

Shame you don’t have Blockbuster Express like I do because they have tons of codes at the moment that you could use several times if you wish. Plus they are getting the new releases on-time.

I like Redbox but using Blockbuster Express a lot lately due to all the codes. My preference is based on movies available and codes available, and right now that is Blockbuster.
