Thanks for the early update Michael…

    -District 9
Probably the best of the bunch.

    -It Might Get Loud
A documentary featuring Jimmy Page, who could refuse?

    -Extract
A Mike Judge comedy might be worthy of a promo code.

    -Paranormal Activity
When available, but only for a promo code. Out of curiosity, I want to see how *good* a horror movie can be made for a reported fifteen-thousand dollars.

Already saw several of these movies at the theater. I absolutely loved District 9 though I’m not into Sci Fi at all. Thought the acting and directing were superb as the movie builds and unfolds in a way that you become emotionally involved with both the main human and the aliens. Hope there’s a sequel. Paranormal Activity was a joke for me. Way too much hype. If you get terrified by a swaying chandelier and footsteps, then you’ll be on the edge of your seat the whole movie.

haha thats the first negative thing I heard about Paranormal Activity, but really, the trailer scenes don’t look that scary. but i guess I’ll give it a whirl to see what all the hype is about.

Are you kidding? I thought District 9 wasn’t all that great. The first half was really slow it took like an hour for the good parts to finally show up in that movie. I remember wanting to leave the theater when I saw the movie. And I saw it at a screening for free.

        rb [visitor]

No, I’m not kidding! I loved District 9! You must be equating “the good parts” as those parts with a lot more special effects/action. I liked the slow but steady involvement with both the main human character transformation and the main alien family so that when the movie went from character involvement to action/special effects, etc. I was totally hooked.

I wonder which ones are going to say “Checked Out” and really mean Unavailable.

NEW REDBOX WEBSITE SUCKS – I hope Redbox is reading this. I want them to know that I don’t appreciate them violating user interface consistency, and restricting my ability to “open link in new window”, which comes in handy sometimes.

Who the hell do they think they are messing with my user interface?

Web standards are there for a reason. Tell your 16 year old web programmer to take a hike. I’m really tired of this. Just because there’s a thing called Javascript doesn’t mean you can just screw up or restrict what everyone expects to be standard features of a web browser.

I used to be able bookmark the initial page for my ZIP code so it comes up first thing, NOW YOU CAN’T !!! I have to type my ZIP in every time.

When it’s really busy on release day I like to EASILY open NEW WINDOWS for each movie I’m interested in that’s out of stock, and then reload them so I can see if they have become available close by, NOT ANYMORE! You have to start over from scratch to do that.

And that STUPID search by ZIP code, if you go look at one location and then go back to look at another, the ZIP code is gone and you have to SEARCH AGAIN!!!

If you used STANDARD web technology, I could open each location in a new window, that would at least be a work around while YOU FIX THIS PROBLEM, but noooooo, you disabled that with your JavaCrap!

And why do we have to enable Javascript just to use your website anyway? What’s so difficult about looking up a few movies in normal html? Is your web programmer just trying to make it extra complicated for job security? CAN THAT DUDE MAN!

    I’m REALLY PISSED OFF!!!!

Just couldn’t leave well enough alone. IDIOTS!

I called in my complaint, but the people answering the phone have no clue and probably won’t forward the complaint like I asked. Hell, I don’t expect the CEO or whoever to understand this anyway.

Yep, you are right. I get tired of typing my zip code so many times.

Another thing that sucks is that under “find a movie” they do list all the movies, but the most recent ones. Every Redbox kiosk has a bunch of older movies not listed in “find a movie”. The concept of having a section with every movie available is too hard to understand?

      Agreed!

redbox’s site has become far, far less usable over time [and slower too].

When will they comply with standard conventions!

Damn, cant believe you just spent all that time writing that
You are one whiny loser and you called to complain about being a fat lazy loser who cant spend an additional 3 seconds typing in 5 numbers
A lot of people suck on this site, with that long whiny rant you currently hold the crown for suck ass losers
and Redbox has nothing to do with this site

Anyway, anyone else find it impossible to find The Hangover at any of the 10 or so kiosks that come up in your zip search results?

I could not find the hangover, I tried to check it out at 12:00am mon and they were all “checked out”. Also it is no longer the 5 digit zip, some ask for your entire address, which can be annoying if you have to do it more then twice.

Gotta agree with everything you said. I can’t even do movie searches on my work computer, because they have javascript locked out due to security issues. Also, Javascript does not work with the Iphone, so again I can’t look up movies. I can use the insideredbox app to find movies – apparently that does not use javascript.

Bottom line: The new site redbox blows, they should have left well enough alone.
I just use the insideredbox app instead.

You tell them! I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s good to hear that I’m not in need of anger management for being so irritated with Redbox for ruining their site.

I think it been about a week but did Redbox change some things around on their site? From reading above, I guess they did? So, I’m having problems with it too…

I use the Seamonkey (Mozilla) browser. Whenever I go to http://www.redbox.com now, the main site, I just get this:

    XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
    Location: http://www.redbox.com/
Line Number 203, Column 89: More Movies
    —————————————————————————————-^

I’ve tried it on serveral different computers running Seamonkey, they all throw a similar error. Firefox was ok. Maybe somebody can get in touch with them and let them know, they just killed off anyone using the Seamonkey browser which used to work just fine and dandy up till about a week ago I think. Anyone else having this problem?

    Thanks!

They are not following HTML standards. The guy who designs the site is a idiot and should be fired. Basic HTML should be the first thing you learn before calling yourself a web designer.
The guy is a Javascript junkie and thinks it’s there so he can do things in a non standard way, “his way” so he doesn’t understand what human interface guidelines or browsing consistency is.
Examples of bad design are when you go to a site and it completely takes over your scrolling and makes you use some silly scrolling things that make the scrolling seem likes it’s connected to a rubber band.
Sites that restrict you to only using Javascript are the worst. It shows you the designer didn’t want to spend the extra time and do it right by making it compatible with non Javascript browsers.
Javascript is INSECURE, it will always be used to break into your system.

NEVER LET ANYONE PROGRAM YOUR COMPUTER FROM REMOTE!

It just makes sense. You can’t depend on the “sandbox” to save you when they update Javascript all the time with new features that may have security problems.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN?

You know redbox is getting a few studios’ movies late right? Hangover was one this past week but I just took a shot on Saturday night at 8pm at my local 7-11 redbox and it was in…..
whole transaction took less than 1 minute….so great!

Do you use the website to find a kiosk that has it and reserve it?

I only found Hanover in Manteca, Ca and NO where in the Stockton/Lodi area and I looked everyday 10 times a day from early Tuesday morning thru Friday night…..so I did pick it up in Manteca and later on Saturday night returned it to my local Stockton 7-Eleven so, that person that picked it up in Stockton…..That was me!!

why would Paranormal Activity have a delay? It’s released by Paramount. Anyways, I think this is a great week for dvds, same as last week. I wil rent District 9, It Might Get Loud, and Extract. I can’t wait to see them, especially It Might Get Loud. U2 is my favorite band and The Edge is simply amazing! Jimmy Page is a guitar god, and Jack White does whatever he can to get people in the 21st century to listen to rock n’ roll. It should be interesting.

it wasnt delayed .. it was always planned for dec 29…dont know why it popped up a week early as coming soon here..

anyone RENT PUPPY PARTY is it worth the 1.07 to rent ..Im thinking its probally just like the PUPPY BOWL on ANimal planet (kids got bored quickly watching that) was thinking of picking it up and letting them watch it christmas day

Michael said their would be a delay in PA’s release, as if one of the big 3 released it, but the rest would be available on release date. I meant delayed in the way Universal movies are delayed in Redbox. But Paramount released it so there shouldn’t be a delay.

I already saw it in theaters (I thought is was somewhat creepy but not scary). I still will rent it in Redbox so I can see my name in the dvd credits (it will be in there since i signed my name on the dvd credits thing online, long story).

Don’t plan on getting/watching the puppy movie, BUT depending how old your kids are, the movie Penelope is cute and should keep the attention for kids around 7 years old and up. Suggestion, go to the library Wed. or Thursday and take out around 3 or 4 kids classics. Because libraries are closed Friday/Christmas, you shouldn’t have to return them until Saturday. Or, if you haven’t used Acme 25 yet, use it to get the puppy movie and hope it keeps the kids entertained!

Hey RB: Gulp… does your library allow movies to be checked out for only one day? I check them out for a week (no charge.) And get this – my library allows THIRTY movies at a time! How crazy is that? Who is going to watch over 4 movies a day?

          • Visitor [Join Now]
            rb [visitor]

Turnip…My local library is 2 days for movies BUT there are libraries in the next county to me that lets you keep a movie for 7 days. My local library has a limit of 3 movies at a time, but the libraries in the other counties have a limit of 5 movies at a time!!!

hey rb you said a while back that your from the pittsburgh area right? what libraries do you use? i always use peters township library since it’s close to me and they have a wonderful selection of everything. they let you check out movies for a week

      • Visitor [Join Now]
        rb [visitor]

I am north of pittsburgh, on the border of Allegheny and Butler County but considered Butler County. I’ve used Northland and Shaler libraries in Allegheny county and know that you can borrow movies for a week from these two libraries. However, my local library one mile up the road in Butler county allows me to only borrow for 2 days. The movie selections in the Allegheny County libraries are way better than my smaller local Butler library. I’ve seen these libraries offer dvd movies to borrow just a week or two after the dvd is a new release, and also way better selection of all genres. That said, if I don’t find the movie that I want at my local library, they will search for the movie at other libraries and get it for me if possible…though it may take up to a week to get it. My local library is good for award-winning movies, and indies… Just got and watched from my local library Man on A Wire and There Will Be Blood and thought both were excellent.

I suspect that District 9 will be very easy to get since the Revenue Sharing deal that Redbox signed with Redbox forces Redbox to take a large number of copies of their titles compared to other studios.

However, District 9 is an excellent film so this will work out well for the customers of Redbox.

      • Visitor [Join Now]
        rb [visitor]

Wow, I agree again with John Small. District 9 is an EXCELLENT movie. Make sure when you go to watch it that you are prepare to invest your time and attention to the movie because if you have the movie on but are running in and out of the room doing other errands, you won’t get the deserving experience from this movie.

When it comes to movies, RB, we likely agree a fair amount. It is just that I look at the Redbox argument from the business side of things rather than the consumer side of things.

My only complaint with Redbox, RB, is that their business model does not work unless they can change how the entire wholesale/revenue sharing model works in the rentailing industry.

If Redbox would use a realistic approach to renting movies then I would be fully behind them. I just get annoyed when Lowe spouts off about how great Redbox is doing when anyone looking at their numbers can see that they are barely scraping by while trying to skirt the legalities of the system.

I really wish they would raise their rates so that they could put all of this legal nonsense behind them and get the other studios on board.

I think their convenience factor far outweighs the price factor when it comes to people renting from them. They would likely keep 75-80% of their customer base even if they raised the price of a rental to $2.00 for the first night.

I know it is a pain for people who like thing super cheap. But $2.00 is still pretty darn cheap when you look at it. Especially if the movie you want is just around the corner and you don’t have to wait for it in the mail.

Watched All About Steve for about 20 minutes. 99 cent coupon for rental place.

So poor that I gave up and am returning it today.

        They don’t carry major releases?

All About Steve and 500 Days of Summer both did over $30 million at the box office.

They also haven’t stocked the newest American Pie movie either?

Seems like bad business sense to me.

District 9 is just o.k. It is filmed in the same style as The Office, and that new show Modern Family… That kind of fake documentary style, with the shaky camerawork that looks like some idiot is running around with a little handheld, and people talking to the camera like they’re being interviewed. It’s really annoying and takes away from the movie. And for the first half of the movie the main human is a jackass and you don’t give a crap about him at all. At some point they do manage to get you to kind of care about him, god knows how, but you kind of hate humans altogether after watching this…so yeah. Oh, and, I can read what the aliens are saying just fine thanks to subtitles, but how do the humans in the movie understand them? Just wierd stuff all around, but I guess it’s worth a buck.

Yeah I just picked it up. It surprised me as being available already since it has a release date of December 29th and I saw it in the machine when I was returning The Hangover, Wizards of Waverly Place Extended Edition, and District 9. Sucks I couldn’t find an Unrated copy of The Hangover. I didn’t even get to watch the rated version I was able to find but oh well I used a free code that I got from my aunt who works at H-E-B, a local grocery chain store, and she had some printed out on receipts. Hopefully I can get more of these codes from her.

Is Redbox not getting any of the major movies for this week.
I’ve only seen Paranormal Activity, Mail Order Bride, Facing Ali, and Au Pair 3: Adventure In Paradise added. Is Redbox not getting 9, Jennifer’s Body, or A Perfect Getaway?

Redbox is only carrying Thug and Hip-Hop movies in the area that I am in because it’s mostly black people. If we want a white movie, we have to venture out to the Redbox in the white areas of town….it sucks.

One thing that irritates me about redbox is the checkout process when reserving movies online. Why can’t you put 2 or 3 movies in your cart and checkout all at once instead of finding a movie, checking out, THEN HAVING TO search again by zip code for that redbox, find the next movie you want, checkout…etc, etc until you are done.

Also, why can’t they make a freakin box that has multiple sides?? Just think how nice it would be if the middle slot (current screen location) was for all the people who don’t quite get the concept of going online and reserving their movies in advance and therefore choose to stand there for 5 or 10 minutes going through all the movies, PLUS there were 2 additional hubs on the side for RETURNING MOVIES and PICKING UP online reservations ONLY. It’s really frustrating when you get behind someone in line who thinks they need to GO THROUGH EVERY MOVIE and read EVERY DESCRIPTION for the movies while there is a line of 6 or 7 people behind them.
