Bucking industry trends towards a more windowed approach, Disney is planning on making its hit film Alice in Wonderland available to Redbox and Netflix the same day it is for sale on DVD and BD, June 1.

There’s still a chance, of course, that the studio could make an 11th-hour delay deal the way Fox did with Avatar recently. Such a move, says BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield, might have a domino affect on Hollywood holdouts to the windowing structure. Said Greenfield:

“If Disney shifts to a window on kiosks and subscription-by-mail, we believe it could trigger additional studios to join the structure, pioneered by Warner/Fox/Universal,”

On the other hand, says Wedbush Morgan analyst Edward Woo, Disney titles tend to have a better track record at retail than at rental, which makes the move seem more sensible. Said Woo:

“Disney knows that most of its releases are family or kid titles that tend to be purchased rather than rented, so they don’t view a threat from Redbox or Netflix . . . People are going to buy the movie as a collectable, even if they rent.

Is this a smart move by Disney, Insiders, or are they shooting themselves in the foot by allowing cheap rentals the day Alice is available for sale?

Disney is making the right choice. Hopefully other studios will see this and follow Disney’s lead instead of following Warner/Fox/Universal.

Could it ALSO be that Disney KNOWS “Alice” is a bomb?

Now now… Don’t let your personal views of the film cloud your comments. I liked the film. I like most everything Tim Burton does. I hope Iger is doing this to show that Film titles can come out on DVD and BD and be Rented and still turn a profit. If it was up to Iger we wouldn’t even have to go to the theatre to see the movie in the first place, we could have it digitally delivered to our HDTV.

at least locally Family video has changed their Price plan

1.00 for 1 night or 2.00 for 5 nights with no delays

Delmar has 1.99 new movies with no delay

dont know why redbox should have delays when B*M are selling the same movie for 1.00 a night

This is a big mistake on Disney’s part. They are trading Redbox pennies for DVD sellthrough dollars. Blind Side/Avatar/Sherlock Holmes sold like crazy on DVD.
