Is Redbox about to make a move to start allowing free online rentals of its movies? A new feature on their website sure makes it look like that might just be the case.
Just added today, Redbox is giving new online users a “Free rental credit” after they make their first online rental with their new account. While this could be just a one-time deal, I am guessing that Redbox would not setup a system to make this possible without planning to use it in even more ways.

If you don’t already have a redbox.com account, this could be a great time to get one. If you are like me and have had one for years already, there is no free lunch for you, at least not this time.
This move also brings up some questions: Is Redbox about to start a “loyalty program”, where frequent renters can get free rentals based on how many movies they rent? Will they start allowing promo codes to be used online, at least in certain situations? Or, is this just another way for Redbox to track its customers and keep them from “gaming” the system with other promo code usage?

I fear you may misunderstand the promotion.
It is not for an online rental, as in …download and watch…
It is for a movie that you RESERVE online, then go and pick up at the redbox location that you reserved it at.
My understanding of the post point is that in the past you were never able/allowed to use a promo code to make an online RESERVATION of a dvd. However, with this new promotion when you make your first reservation online as a new online customer, pick up you movie, return it–you then receive a ‘credit’ good for your second online reservation. Therefore, when you make that second online reservation you are getting the second dvd free as you are redeeming ONLINE the ‘credit’ received from your first online reservation. Redeeming this ‘credit’ for a free movie is actually no different that redeeming a ‘promo code’ for a free movie–which you were never allowed to do before ONLINE…. I agree with J.S. though that I don’t think Redbox is using this promotion as a doorway to use any/all promo codes for online reservations…

I agree that they will not open up all promo codes for online use, and I don’t know that they will open ANY promo codes for online use…
However, since they went to the trouble of building an online “credit” system, I am sure they have some useful plans on how to use it in their marketing, and hopefully those plans will be of benefit to their customers.
It is also possible that such a “credit” system could lead to a nice way to have gift cards, which I have said before would be a GREAT feature. Let’s hope…
It looks like this is to track customers information online. I doubt they will start allowing codes to be used online for reservation purposes. Redbox makes such little profit now as it is that if they let people have even more free movies they would self-destruct quickly.

Does everyone remember when Redbox advertised “No Membership Required”? If I am not mistaken, this is pretty close to a membership.
Be aware that on July 1st, all debit card users will have either opted in or out of overdraft protection based on a new federal law. This will have a negative effect on Redbox based on the number of debit card transactions they process. Getting an account will help Redbox with this change.
Why do you think this will affect Redbox negatively? How will the overdraft protection make a difference? I wouldn’t think it would have an effect, but am curious to hear the reasoning.

I think that Redbox should have a “frequent flyer program”. Now that I have a life of leisure (retired civil servant) I rent four to five movies per week at Redbox. A nice ploy would be to have online usable codes emailed by surprise good for Mondays. That would be a good reason to rent new releases on Tuesdays if you have to return the Monday freebie anyway.
