Well, it looks like the rumors are true. Redbox Instant CEO Shawn Strickland has all but confirmed that his company, a joint venture between Redbox and Verizon, will enter the original content game.
Strickland’s remarks came during Advertising Age’s digital conference. The executive strongly implied that Redbox Instant will follow the lead of Netflix and other streamers in creating original content to distinguish itself from the competition. Said Strickland:
“I don’t see how you can avoid having original content,”
Interestingly, Strickland went on to say that his company would likely develop family-friendly content, in contrast to more adult fare on Netflix such as House of Cards and the about-to-launch Hemlock Grove. Strickland also said that Redbox Instant would select actors who are known to star in family-friendly shows:
“Kevin James is a rock star at kiosks . . . This is one area from a programming perspective we can look at and see how we can fit there and fill a void.”
Would you want to see an original series on Redbox Instant starring Kevin James? Is this a smart move for the nascent service?
