Great news for the movie rental world this week coming from the Associated Press. You can read the full article below, and make sure you look for an awesome annoucement coming this summer that will make us Redbox users very happy!

The article follows:

Redbox aims to bring a DVD rental machine to a lobby near you
JOSHUA FREED
Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS – The big red vending machine at the McDonald’s whirrs and hums and spits out rental DVDs of Chicken Little and King Kong – and maybe, if McDonald’s is lucky, profits.

Machines run by McDonald’s Corp. subsidiary Redbox Automated Retail have popped up in hundreds of Golden Arches restaurants in six cities in an experiment to see whether they drive more customers into the stores. Rental chain Movie Gallery is experimenting with DVD rental machines, too, saying the machines will make rental transactions easier for customers and make its stores more efficient.

The spread of DVD rental machines comes as rental stores are struggling under a business model that hasn’t changed much from the mom-and-pop video stores of 20 years ago. The rental business has suffered from the sale of cheap DVDs, rent-by-mail services like Netflix Inc., and expanding video-on-demand from cable companies.

“We think it’s a tremendous opportunity,” said Greg Waring, Redbox’s vice president of marketing. “We think we’re providing a new model for the industry that is going to be difficult for the traditional retailers to compete against.”

About the size of a soda machine, each “Redbox” holds 500 disks and includes a touch screen so customers can pick a movie, and a credit-card reader for paying the $1-a-night fee. They don’t take cash. Customers return the movies at the machine.

Signs near the machines promote its movies – kids’ titles down low, movies for grown-ups on top. Redbox staffers load newly released DVDs each Tuesday. Redbox workers at the headquarters in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., can monitor which titles are renting the most in each machine and adjust their selection accordingly. Generally there are 50 to 60 individual titles.

McDonald’s came up with the idea in 2003 as it looked for ways to draw more people into its restaurants. It began experimenting with the machines in Denver in 2004 and now has 750 machines in restaurants in five cities, including the Twin Cities. It’s measuring their popularity and whether they draw more people into the stores.

Its subsidiary Redbox isn’t waiting to see how the McDonald’s experiment turns out. It has placed the machines in 75 grocery stores, and has signed agreements for 400 more grocery locations, including Stop & Shop and Giant stores owned by Royal Ahold NV in the Northeast.

This summer, the company plans to let customers go online to check title availability in a particular location and rent a movie on the spot for pickup at that machine later.

Waring said their market share of all DVD rentals in Denver is in the low- to mid-teens, and that includes Netflix customers. Redboxes there average about 1,200 visits a week, including both the rental and return visit, Waring said. He said he didn’t know how many of those customers ended up buying food rather than just stepping in to rent or return a movie.

“We have some very aggressive projections in terms of our growth, led by McDonald’s locations,” Waring said. “There’s over 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. We foresee a day when we’re in the vast majority of those.”

In Apple Valley, a suburb of the Twin Cities, Chris and Teresa Kliner stopped at a McDonald’s for both a meal and a copy of Chicken Little for their daughters to watch during a visit with relatives in the Twin Cities. The Kliners, of Kenosha, Wis., used the machine to avoid signing up at Blockbuster to rent a single movie.

“With kids, it’s easier this way, because they’re not running all over the store,” Teresa Kliner said while daughters Olivia and Analiese played on the slides at the restaurant’s indoor playground.

While sales are growing fast, Redbox doesn’t appear to be profitable yet, according to comments made by minority investor Coinstar Inc., a vending company based in Bellevue, Wash.

Coinstar spent $20 million in December to buy a little less than half of Redbox, while McDonald’s retained a majority stake. Coinstar also loaned $4.5 million to another DVD vending operator, DVDXpress, and sales at those two businesses combined grew more than 85 percent between the third and fourth quarters of last year, Coinstar CEO David Cole told analysts in February.

But Coinstar also predicted Redbox would lose money this year – $4 million to $5 million for Coinstar’s share of the company. That works out to $8.5 million to $10.5 million. Waring declined to comment on Redbox’s losses, other than to say the machines themselves are profitable. Coinstar declined to comment on Redbox’s profitibility.

Movie Gallery, the rental chain that bought Hollywood Entertainment Corp. in April 2005, is also experimenting with DVD rental machines. Chief Financial Officer Tim Price told analysts on Nov. 10 that its machines will hold at least 1,000 disks, and some hold as many as 5,000, and can be used 24 hours a day.

“We’re very early in the results, but still very, very encouraged,” Price said. Movie Gallery declined to comment for this story.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter said he believes Movie Gallery is aiming to see if it can cut store hours, leaving the machine to rent movies even when the store’s doors are locked. Movie Gallery hasn’t offered any clues about how well the experiment is going, or how many stores have rental machines, he said.

DVD kiosks can probably grab spur-of-the-moment customers, but Pachter questioned whether they can dent the business of stores like Blockbuster Inc. and Netflix. Most customers rent new releases, but they still like the idea of a wide selection at a store or from Netflix’s 55,000 titles, he said.

If Redbox gets into every McDonald’s in the country, he said, “maybe they’ll get up to 5 percent market share. Maybe.”

Blockbuster Inc., the nation’s largest movie-rental chain, has operated vending machines in some international markets but has no plans to do more, spokesman Randy Hargrove said.

“They don’t generate significant rental volume or significant revenue,” Hargrove said. “They just don’t have the capacity to do that.”

Jeff Smith, a McDonald’s franchisee who owns seven restaurants and runs a cooperative that buys advertising for Twin Cities McDonald’s, said he doesn’t know whether the DVD machines are bringing in more customers because so many other variables, like the weather and promotions, affect whether people eat out.

But he says his customers love the machines.

“The only thing I invest is my space,” Smith said. “We don’t get paid anything, and it doesn’t cost us anything to have it.”

To everyone who keeps asking about franchising: GET A CLUE!!!! REDBOX DOES NOT FRANCHISE!!! I doubt that you people have “searched the internet”. If you really did, you would have discovered that Redbox is owned 100% by Coinstar. REDBOX DOES NOT FRANCHISE!!!! These aren’t gumball machines that you drive around re-filling. Every machine that you see is 100% owned by Coinstar. Every worker that you see at the machines is a Redbox employee, they are not “their own boss” with a franchise route to oversee.

You shouldn’t even consider being a franchisee of a product/company that you obviously know zero about.

So, did anyone ever find anything out about franchising or investing in redbox? I spoke with someone that was setting one up in our town. He said that all redbox machines where owned by redbox, which is based in Chicago. I read in a boston newspaper that the idea came from mcdonald’s corp. That is all that I know. I’m curious to know more.

Redbox doesn’t offer franchising! I’ve been waiting for the opportunity with Redbox for over a year and unfortunately don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon. I’ve recently decided to look into another company, http://www.dvdnowkiosks.com who does offer franchising and personally I prefer the look of their equipment over Redbox.

I’m sorry, but it seems that you have been misinformed. I just spoke with a red box representative and he told me that every business that has a redbox is franchising it. All you have to do is be a business. You submit a form to red box and they consider whether or not it would be beneficial enough for them to include you as a franchise partner based on a few factors such as customer volume, etc. If you don’t believe me or would like to speak with a live Redbox representative yourself for more info dial 1-866-733-2693

Wrong!!!! It takes 25 days before they charge you for the movie, not four! And then they charge you $25 plus tax. If you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t give advice on here!!Geeeshh, some people just don’t have a clue!!

      From Redbox Help section:

What if I lose the DVD case or DVD?

You can purchase a new jewel case for just $1.00 right from any redbox kiosk. Look for “Empty Case” under ‘E’ when sorting DVDs alphabetically, or go to the last product when sorting by release date. Still need help? I really hate the idea of this RedBox!! I own a video store. I just dont understand how such Big companies dont care about the mom and pop stores. What is this world coming to? Its a really sad sad day when everything is in a machine. Pretty soon all of our food will be in a redbox all of our clothes etc…. I live in a very small town and there are three video stores here and now a redbox has arrived which in fact this town does not allow francise’s so im headed to city council tomorrow and having a word with them. I mean come on three families will be affected with there livley hoods here. Now that is a sad thing to happen when were trying to make a honest living. So when you all have cards charged wrong or movies wont work or you cant get credit for your movie when it didnt work or your standing out in pouring rain or the snow to get a movie I hope that you realize that one day because of this you cant walk into a video store and have a real person greet you or give you the proper customer service you deserve. That you all were a part of this. All I can say is that we all would like to keep our jobs but its almost impossible when the Macdonalds and walmarts keep pushing us all out.

Wendy, I am sure that there are products and services that you now conusme in a different manner than you once did. Are you against all internet shopping. Are you against looking things up online rather than using a phone book or a encyclopedia?

I am not unsympathetic to your situation, but don’t take it personal. Redbox offers the conviennce and affordability that I am looking for.

My local video store are huge conglomerates that price their movies around $5 for 5 a day rental. I only need it for one day.

I don’t think you can fight competition. To survive, you will need to provide a properl priced product that customers perceive to have value.

Be optimistic! Who profits from each rental store in your town? One family? And would it be a problem if one more family opened a rental store? So how is this different than one new store being open? Truth be told, you should jump on this before anyone else and consider replacing your storefront with easier to maintain kiosks. With lower over head you can afford to maintain reasonable profits while charging less to the people in your town. Then everyone’s happy.

You forget each Redbox and its parts have to be manufactured, furnished, ran and maintained by real humans. If we would have stuck with the dark age model; Blacksmith, Baker, farmer, King. There wouldnt be even close to enough jobs. If you think about the whole picture, each Redbox employs just as many people as your video store. The bottom line is if you want to support your family you have to stay competitive. whether you stock Redbox machines or own a video store. Im sorry but im not going to spend $5 on a movie when I can get it for free or $1. Besides from the the reason we go to machines is because your service sucks. If im wrong than people wont stop coming to your store.

If you really want to go after the source of mom and pop closing, look at the federal reserve system.

That’s right. It’s called created credit. It’s money out of thin air. The big corporations use it to build the big buildings. Without it they couldn’t do it and you would still be in business.

It’s actionable, you can sue and if you don’t let them settle out of court and push it to the end you might just win. Get a lot of the shop owners to join in your suit.

You should have sued when walmart, office depot, home depot, came to town. Why didn’t you? Why don’t you understand how the Constitution works? What real money is? Are you a real American?

As for business. You must be more dynamic and change for survival. You knew this was coming for years and did nothing. You saw the big huge rental kiosks inside grocery stores in the late 90’s, you knew they were going to get smaller.

Here Here! You must adapt to the changing markets and technologies, not force the markets to stagnate or sue them when the industry changes. Don’t resort to trying to tax emails like the post office because no one sends snail mail anymore. Don’t keep building train tracks when common carriers became a cheaper mode of transortation. Don’t keep making Beta tapes when videotapes ruled the market and don’t keep making videos when DVDs took over. This stubborn thinking is why the auto industry is in trouble. By not changing to smaller gas efficient cars when the need arose or accomodating the newfound needs of society. You must adapt and overcome or be left in the dust with 8-tracks, butter churners and block ice deliverymen.

you do not want to buy these $20,000 machines if you plan on renting for $1 and honoring all the freebies.

These are loss leader machines for the most part.

Not a business avenue you want to do independently.

You can’t purchase them, you can only be a franchise partner.

      • Visitor [Join Now]
        Jef [visitor]

If by franchise partner you mean that they will put one on your businesses property if you own a busy store, then yes. If, you mean that they will sell, lease, rent you a machine as an “franchise owner” or in any way let you in on the profit, then no it wont happen.

BTW coinstar owns 41% of redbox. You can’t get a piece of that rock either.

Coinstar owns 100% of Redbox. Coinstar is a publicly traded company. Stock symbol: CSTR. You can buy Coinstar stock. That is the only way that someone can have anything financially vested in Redbox, by buying Coinstar stock, which any one can do.

Did you know that revenue from the sale and rental of DVD’s rose 8% in 2005 to a total of $22.8 billion? Or that in a traditional rental store 90% of revenue is generated from new releases? The remainder of their inventory, potentially consisting of thousands of older titles, only accounts for ten percent of the rental revenue. When you factor in the capital outlay to open a store, the overhead of staff and management, and the high cost of rent in a well trafficked area, operating a rental storefront can be a daunting task to say the least. Yet, movie rental stores have traditionally been a great business that, through a lot of hard work, have made their owners a substantial income. There is a lot of income you can generate from being part of a redbox franchise if they deem you worthy to be part of their amazing corporation. call 1-866-redbox3 for more info.

I think anyone can put up a Redbox, the products are the same, you just need a good location. There are a few DVD suppliers that can offer you a free website (myvideostore.com, formovies.com) so you can have newsletters sent to your customers to keep them updated with new releases. There are really some good manufacturers in Italy that looks good on their website but their software is different due to membership requirements and it will be hard to get help on systems malfunction. I think redbox dont sell their machines. Dvdplay looks for area developers. Maybe NCR will sell to anyone like their ATMs once their commitment with Blockbuster and Moviecube are done.

2 messages above this one, IS IT THAT HARD TO READ BEFORE YOU POST?

WTF is wrong with you people? You managed to have enough IQ to scroll all the way down and enter text into the little box, type in your name, and then figure out where and what the Submit button was for, but you couldn’t read a few comments before asking a question that has been asked MANY TIMES BEFORE???

Then you want to run a Redbox kiosk? YOU AREN’T QUALIFIED!!! STOP NOW, DON’T BOTHER, you need a IQ above 70 to run one. ALL YOU WANT IS THE MONEY, like it just rolls in and you don’t need to know anything.

Go start a ice cream store and try not to scoop ice cream, IT WON’T HAPPEN!

You better understand network communication, computers and HOW TO FIX YOUR OWN DAMN CAR! The thing is mechanical and COMPLICATED! If you can’t even fix your own car how do you think you are going to maintain this thing?

I’m sorry but I’m tired of want-to-be idiots.

I hope Redbox gives people a basic test before allowing them to own one. If they don’t they are going to spend all their profit babysitting idiots.

The most important thing to realize is that Redbox DOES NOT FRANCHISE!!!! It is a publicly traded company that owns all of its machines. ALL EMPLOYEES ARE REDBOX EMPLOYEES. There is no such thing as being as a franchisee with a ‘route’ of kiosks. All field representatives are Redbox employees.

Holy Christ have you been lied to. A store contacts Redbox and inquires about getting a machine added. Redbox crunches the store’s numbers and deems if it is feasible. No fees are exchanged. Redbox determines if there is enough traffic at said store to warrant a kiosk. The store benefits by increased customer traffic (most stores would prefer to have the machines located indoors). THERE ARE NO FRANCHISE PARTNERS!!! EACH AND EVERY REDBOX MACHINE EVERYWHERE IS 100% OWNED BY COINSTAR!!!! The stores have 0% ownership or income invested in the kiosk on their property. It is basic business. The store will allow Redbox to install a machine IN THE HOPES that the increased foot traffic to the machine will spill over to increased foot traffic in the store.

Why are there posts from 2008 even being shown. There are all different date of posts showing up. It was better the old way when you could post a comment under where it shows the codes. Now anything shows up.
How many of you would like to see this change?

I don’t know what you are talking about. People can locate and comment on any post they like. It doesn’t just show up. I could easily remove the list of recent comments from the sidebar and then no one would notice where comments were being posted.

Posting on the Codes page turned into a major problem, which is why I turned it off.

Like I mentioned before, I will be implementing a new discussion forum in the future, but until then, this is what we have to work with.

Totally agree with Honeybunny. Very confusing. Posts and dates seem to be all over the place. I’ve seen people responding to posts from like a year ago, and it’s like ,”what the heck” …

The old comments are coming up because someone went into the archives and decided to post a comment on an old “page”. When you do that it puts a link on the right of your screen under Recent Comments section. That section just lets people know that someone commented on a page recently. The page does not have to be new to be in that section. It can be old(from archives or new). To view the new pages and comments on the NEW pages, you have to click the links of the stories, they are under the Recently Posted section, just above the Recent Comments section. All on the right sidebar. The Recently Posted section will only have the new stories and new comments on it. You won’t view the older comments if you stick to that section.
Every article (page) has an area for you to post a comment or leave a reply on a comment that has already been posted. It is made that way because you are supposed to be leaving a comment that has something to do with the story at the top of every page. Not everyone knows that and most often you will see comments that has nothing to do with the story on that page. The way wordpress is set up is similar to a forum but it is viewed a bit differently than most forums.
I hope that kinda clears it up.

I am interested in Redbox and would like to know if it is possible to franchise? Would you please send me any and all information regarding franchise information and all costs, fees. I am looking into investing, as soon as possible in the unique business venture.

    Thank you,

I wouldn’t invest in ANYTHING if I were you because you’re not even bright enough to read and tell that this site is NOT owned by Redbox! So obviously you’re either too stupid or too lazy to do a little reading and research, so you sure don’t need to be running a business!

Some of you really need to play nice. Some people in this world are not cut out for business or may not be able to fix a machine. There is no need to insult and try to damage someone with your words when they like all of us our trying to step out and capitalize on what they see as a possible opportunity. I’m on here researching this Red Box thing because I am in business and I can fix a machine, however that makes me no better than the next person. Ask your mom she will be able to help you with your manners or go see a licensed clinical counselor. Attack me next if you must I always consider the source before it affects me.

Bite me you piece of shite!! I also consider the source and you’re a MORON who does OBVIOUSLY think he’s better than the next person with your “holier than thou” attitude!! Sounds like you need to see a “licensed clinical counselor” about your “holier than thou” problem!!

Redbox is wholly owned by Coinstar. Seriously, Coinstar? how in the frack did a chitty company like Coinstar who litterally rapes 9% off the top of your coin stash come to own such a sweet company like Redbox.

i dont think that you can invest in RedBox in any other way than to buy Coinstar stock CSTR on the nasdaq. the good news is that it has doubled in price since december when most of the market crapped out.

there are actual vending machines you can buy for dvds but they are not redboxes.

i also have to mention this because i have not been getting any feedback.
i have gotten 20+ dvds for free using the code “redbox” then changing the last 2 digits of my ZIP code. Its ridiculous but every time i return the 2 movies, it lets me rent 2 more. i should probably keep my mouth shut about it, but with the monday codes gone this is a sick exploit.

I see lots of questions about franchising Redbox, but no answers. Does anyone know if they offer franchises? Not all Redboxes are in McDonalds.

They do not offer franchises. I checked. They really don’t…ever. That answer has been given at least a hundred times. Nada, None, Nile, NEVER.

For those of you that want a larger selection of DVDs the Blockbuster in Houston located on FM 1960 at Champions is renting older DVDs for $1.00/day and new releases and blue ray DVDs for $2.00/day. I guess they are trying to compete with redbox!
