Redbox has been toying with higher price points than its famous $1 per night in select markets for a while now, and doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon. After beginning tests of higher pricing in Albuquerque last fall, Redbox has confirmed to TheWrap that tests are also under way in San Diego, Spokane, Miami/West Palm Beach and Modesto.
The pricing in the various test markets goes as follows:
- Albuquerque, NM – $1.50
- San Diego and Modesto, CA – $1.25
- Spokane, WA – $1.15
- Miami/West Palm Beach, FL – $1.15
According to a Coinstar spokesperson:
“We plan to continue the test until we can understand the implications . . . There is no definitive end date.”
Now for the big question: if any of the above prices, or something even higher, were to become Redbox’s new price point, would that affect your rental habits? i am not going to pay 1.25 or 1.50 for a dvd movie. there movies are delayed 28 days like netflix. and most of the movies are garbage anyway. they are only a few anygood

I figured it was just a matter of time before an increase was on the horizon. I’m in RI and they’ve not increased the price here (yet). At $1.25 I might still rent, but not as often… or get one movie on a Friday for my kids, instead of two or three.
Would increase in price cover/exceed the revenue loss caused by same? Redbox is all over the place and I’m sure it’s contributed to the closing or drastic downsizing of Blockbuster retail stores.
I was surprised when I went to rent a movie near my home in CO and see that the REdbox price has increased. Was there some mysterious increase in cost due to Redbox to warrant such an increase or is this Redbox getting greedy? If this increase stays then I have to say no to Redbox. I have already discontinued many other service providers due to their greediness I hope that Redbox doesn’t join this group.
I went to my usual redbox location on Tuesday (Philadelphia) and saw that the price had increased to $1.25. I turned around and left the store.
$1.50 has affected my rental at Redbox here in Albuquerque. Instead of 5 rentals a month, I only do about 1-2 now if even that since the price change. My next 3 rentals are going to be free because of a grocery store promotion on stuff I buy anyway giving me a free rental code so it will be awhile before Redbox will get some cash from me.
A lot of movies have been bad lately and not worth $1.50 to try them out so it also helps in not renting from Redbox as frequently as I used to at a $1 price point.
One of the main reasons as to why I rent from redbox so often is the price. I have several rental cards but soon got turned onto redbox because it is always open. Sometimes I rent several movies at a time and don’t always watch the last one. I wouldnt mind paying the late fee because I knew that it was just a dollar. But, if the price increases, I will be reluctant to go to redbox as often or rent as many dvds. I’ll just go to another store and work their weekly or daily promotions i.e. rent one get one free, 3 dvds for $5 for 5 days etc. Redbox is quick and convenient, but if the price keeps inching up, it won’t be nearly as convenient anymore. Redbox shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds it.
Figures. All the video rental stores are a thing of the past. Now we have to resort to being nickle and dime just to rent a video. I use REDBOX, but I refuse to use their service now.
