RedBox-LogoGalen Smith, CFO of Redbox parent Outerwall, is a confident man. Despite the constant and notable declines in the movie disc rental business, Smith thinks that there’s still a lot of life left in the Redbox business model.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Leveraged Finance Conference, Smith admitted that the disc rental market is on the decline, but noted that combined revenue from kiosk, brick-and-mortar and by-mail subscription rentals will still surpass billion.

That total is projected to drop down to .

4 billion through 2019, however. Smith remains confident in the long-term prospects of Redbox, despite these numbers:

“We have a very contrarian view of the [disc] market . . . We believe it is going to be robust for many, many years.”

Are these the words of an informed insider, or do they echo the misplaced confidence of execs from fallen companies such as Blockbuster and Hollywood Video?

If Digital HD rentals were $1 I’d never look back

RedBox will need to get a Online deal set up. If they don’t in 3-5 years that will be the end of RedBox.
Unless they to rent Old DVD’S for the mass that still wants them in hand. \
And i bet the market for that will be a very big one. i still want my disc in my hand. Yes I got three online streaming deals. NetFlix, Hule, and Warner Archives. But I still have my NetFlix in the mail also…Three at a time. I get 18-20 disc a month in the mail.that Less then a buck a disc. And no driving to talk them back. RedBox can’t touch that… I tghink RedBox will go the Block Buster way. Unless they make a big time big move..
    Just a thought…

P.S…. I think they may go the way of Block Buster…
IF they don’t get some kind of streaming thing going in the years to come. Yes DVD’s will be here for years yet… But they will be gone in I think 5-7 years.
You do know they have a disc now that is 50% smaller. And can hold 50% more….. But the Cost & putting out a new player for them… And the disc. The everyday public could not afford it… But it will come in time……
    Have a good one all.

redbox will be like AoL or Family Video–“The Last of the Mohicans”.

Even though media rental is in decline and drifting off the radar screen, one player will survive.
