It looks like Universal is finally willing to sit down with Redbox and discuss a possible settlement regarding the lawsuit Redbox filed last year.

Redbox sued Universal in October 2008 over new revenue-sharing terms they were imposing on kiosk operators, saying they violate anti-trust laws and misuse copyrights. The restrictions Universal wants to impose include not allowing kiosk operators like Redbox to stock their DVDs until 45 days after their release, limiting the number of DVDs allowed in each kiosk, and requiring the destruction of old inventory (instead of allowing it to be sold). Universal admits no wrong-doing and filed a motion to dismiss the case.

A letter filed by Redbox on Monday, Feb 23 with the US District Court in Delaware explains:

Defendants claim they are willing to engage in settlement discussions. Redbox is also willing to appear at an in-person settlement conference, without preconditions, and would accept a magistrate judge as a mediator of those disputes if the court thinks that result is appropriate. Redbox would not object to suspension of briefing on the current motion, if the Court deems it appropriate. Such a result might be appropriate in light of defendants’ stated position that the current disputes should be resolved through ‘business negotiations rather than litigation.

There is no indication of how this is going to end up, but lets just hope that we as consumers don’t get the short end of the stick.

I rent quite a few movies a week from redbox. I refuse to rent anymore because they just filled them with old movies i’ve already seen. I do not have a movie store anywhere close to me. I work at a few different stop and shops, and it is so convenient. Not only can I pick a movie up from one town, but I can return it at another. So sad. I’ll watch HBO, they play the same old movies redbox is filling up with.

Yea, but every Tuesday the 80s move down the list farther and farther as they add the new releases so you’ll be back renting soon.

You sound like you’ve lost a loved one….LOL
I am a pretty avid movie watcher and the only title with any box office that came out looks like something called Sex Drive and I think they had that one too. Let’s wait and see what they put out this week.

I agree with Malanie.. but there is an easy fix. Update the titles to have the correct (original DVD) release date. That would shuffle them to the bottom where they belong..

I agree I don’t mind the “classic” movies but they should be listed by their original date or have a seperate catagory, so you can easily find the new releases.

For a buck what do you want? I do think they could get rid of the Christmas movies. Their have not been that many good new releases.

It is not how many different movies that Redbox has but do they have enough of the new releases every Tuesday. I have never had a problem renting a movie with Redbox. I rent on-line and pick them up later that day. The older movies they stock are mostly classics that some people have not seen or want to see again. What is the problem? They only cost a dollar. Some people will always find something to complain about. Redbox is great.

They “REDBOX” shouldn’t cave-in to “UNIVERSAL” at all if any company wants to get in the kiosk biz the should if they can let every kiosk have their movies and ever movie studio should too. And let the kiosks sell the movies for what each kiosk can sell them for if it’s a $1:00 to $5:00!

What you’re seeing is the new line of movies called “Redbox Rewind” titles such as “The Karate Kid”, “A Few Good Men”, “Beverly Hills Ninja”, etc.(For some reason, every RR title is from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment). Good idea on their part for people who want to see the older titles.

Also…Redbox shouldn’t cave to any of Universal’s demands. If Redbox has to wait 45 days until after the regular street date to stock their DVDs then why bother? Universal is just power and money hungry.
