Welcome to 2005 – Redbox adds new “Coming Soon” section to their website, as well as a new “Buy a Movie” page.

COMING SOON
I am not really sure what took Redbox so long to add the “Coming Soon” movies to their website, but they have finally done it. They have even added a way for your to be reminded when a movie you want to see comes out.

This has been a feature of the “Inside Redbox Pro” iPhone application for quite some time, which will even notify you of when it hits a kiosk near you. In any case, this is definitely good start and a welcome addition to the Redbox site, and hopefully they can improve on it and give us even more options – you know, before 2015 rolls around! (I jest, of course, but I do think Redbox could speed up some their technology adoption a bit.)

BUY A MOVIE

The “Buy a Movie” page is a different story, however… I think this was likely added to somehow appease the studios that Redbox recently signed agreements with, and it is a terribly lame implementation that I can’t imagine anyone actually using.

The page is not even hosted on their own website – it seems to be a partnership with “The Retailer Place” – which appears to be some sort of shopping cart system. It looks like it was put up rather hastily, and it doesn’t even integrate with the Redbox site at all.

And while the implementation is bad enough, even worse is the fact that they are selling most new releases on DVD for about $22 and Blu-ray for $30. What Redbox customer would ever buy a movie that is priced higher than normal retail from Redbox, which is a discount renting company? Seriously… anyone?

Again, this looks like some sort of stipulation that was added to recent contracts Redbox signed with Warner, Fox and Universal, and not a real attempt to actually sell movies. While I understand why Redbox had to sign these contracts to ensure movie availability, this move really feels more like “selling out” than I would hope to see.

What are your thoughts? Will you enjoy the “Coming Soon” section? Will you ever “buy a movie” through this new system? Let us know in the comments…

aghhh I got all exited about buy a movie ( I bought 1 for $5 from redbox and always tough that they should let you buy it from the webpage and have it available at the kiosk or ship it. I however am not paying more than $7 to buy a movie. Oh well

I want the Blu-ray case when I buy a movie, so that would keep me from doing that. I do like the coming soon section and will check that out.

As a new subscriber and user of Red Box..I really like the service!
But with raising of prices they ought to be aware that BlockBuster also has the same type boxes out there and they may loose customers to them ??

I have not recieved a free movie code on line for a long time what’s up with that.

Redbox only sends out the codes now if you sign up to have it texted to your cell phone. Not a good move at all as a lot of folks don’t text or have a text plan and get irritated with the per text charge, ending up in getting their cell providers to block all texts. Redbox really needs to go back to the email code notices…but then Redbox really does not WANT folks to use the free codes and sending only to those who sign up for cell phone notice cuts the free rentals way down.

Saw the ‘Buy a NEW DVD” and went in to see as did not make sense to me – thought Redbox would be in the bus. to sell USED DVD’s they have too many of and need to unload. YiKES the $ on the NEW DVD’s is way high! Silly move. I sure won’t be buying a new DVD from Redbox. I can wait until the rental stores put them out used – if even then. I am pretty much saturated on collecting more DVD’s space wise and there is zero value in reselling them. They end up at my local library as donations.

I never buy movies so I would not care about this feature. As for the coming attractions it is also something I would not care about.

I am sorely dissapointed…….when I first started using Redbox….their movie selection was equal to the other DVD stores….but of late it has become P-poor…only one or two good movies among a clutter of garbage… not worth watching…

we are at $1.15 + tax here in florida as well. just noticed it at walmart.

this will be the death of redbox, 4 week wait on new releases, and higher price than the blockbuster kiosk.

i rent mostly from blockbuster kiosk now.

it really sux, redbox was really good, now they sold out.. how are they going to survive with higher prices and no new releases…

I thinks that this is a nice move by RedBox to increase the sales of their movies and earn more revenue.
