Public Media Works (PMW) has been a small-time player in the kiosk movie rental business for some time. The company looks to be stepping up its game with a test launch of new kiosks in Southern California that offers paired Blu-ray rentals for 89 cents per disc.

The new kiosks, branded with the “Spot.

The Difference” name, feature two disc slots, one of which is solely dedicated to movie returns.

The kiosks also offer a larger capacity than competing Redboxes (1,400 discs) and feature HD, 32-inch monitors.

Greg Waring, president and COO of PMW, offered the following on the test rollout:

“We believe this launch hails the next generation of entertainment kiosks . . . By listening to consumers we’ve addressed several pitfalls inherent in current kiosk offerings, including low capacity, slow service times and the perception of price gouging for Blu-ray.”

What do you think about these new kiosks, Insiders? Will PMW begin to make a dent in Redbox sales in Southern California, or is the latter too firmly entrenched to be bothered by this upstart?

I will go to whatever kiosk is closest and carries the movies I want to see. That’s why I never use Blockbuster kiosks. I have 2 Red Box kiosks less than a mile away. The nearest blockbuster kiosk is over 5 miles away. It’s all about placement of kiosks and content.

Their machines sound nice. I like the pricing too as long as it’s not introductory. Highly doubt I will see one ever around here, but competition is always good for pricing.

This won’t last. 89 cents for a disc that costs them at minimum $20, plus machines which probably cost double what redbox pays to have theirs made. If you are spending $25-35,000 to build a kiosk, and only charging 89 cents for a $20 kiosk, it will be years before they see ANY profit from the first machines. They won’t make it at that price guaranteed.

If they can go nationwide, that could be trouble for Redbox.

@ the rate PMW is building out [ONLY 20 kiosks in the LA area so far], another ice age will occur before it becomes a player. ;)

What is PMW waiting for? Carl Icahn to invest? His experience with BB should be a big plus ;).

I only wish PMW could make a go of it. I did see one of its kiosks and it makes BBE’s and Redbox’s look like 1950’s era gumball machines.

    Spot pricing is as follows:
$1.00 per day per rental – 1 movie
    OR
$0.89 per day per rental – 2+ movies

    Both price levels include Blu-Ray.

Pretty much all about location, location. I’d rent Redbox a lot more often if they were closer. Sure, only 2 miles away, but those 2 miles are a brutal 15-20 min drive each way.

I recall a Redbox announcement about expanding to CVS by this past holiday season, but haven’t seen that expansion arrive. Once that happens, I’ll rent once or twice a week, as CVS is less than 5 minutes from the house.
