In a press release issue by Redbox yesterday, they say they stocked over 100,000 copies of popular DVD “Wanted” just three days after the street date.

The delay comes from the pending litigation between Redbox and Universal, with Universal wanting Redbox to sign an agreement that severely limits what Redbox can do with Universal films and when they can rent them.

“Redbox is working to uphold our cornerstone principles, providing customers with all major new release DVDs – when they are released – for just $1 per night,” said Gregg Kaplan, chief executive officer, redbox. “Redbox is committed to providing our customers with the highest level of service and value, and we will continue to acquire DVD titles despite attempts to limit consumer access to titles at our kiosks.”

The press release also states that there was significant additional cost incurred by Redbox is getting this release for its customers. Read the full press release here.

I hope Redbox can get things worked out with its new distribution partners so that they can get the movies in their kiosks on the actual release date, but overall I think it was handled fairly well.

What do you think? Did the delay cause you to go elsewhere for this movie?

Are you happy with how Redbox is handling this?

I got my copy Thursday from RB which was ok because i had something to watch later in the week. The only problem I forsee is i like to order my netflix account based on what redbox will have. I suppose if i make sure all Universal films come from netflix it would solve the problem, but that seems like a hassle. Are there any Universal studio releases next week that could cause problems? DARK KNIGHT and HORTON come out next week, which should have no problems. How about for the rest of the month?

there could be a couple more titles that we have to do this to I have been informed that mama mia is one title that we will have to purchase seperately, It was however quite an inconvenience to have my guys purchasing disks at stores but wal-mart was pretty cordial about it they gave a ton of copies each store.

If you have any questions ask away!

Redbox should just stop carrying Universal titles.

Mama Mia, Mummy Dragon Emperor, Death Race, Hamlet 2, Burn Before Reading, and Beethoven’s Big Break are the only Universal titles Redbox would stock through February.

What are the major Universal rentals prior to Wanted? Hellboy 2, Hulk, Sarah Marshall, Strangers, Leatherheads.

None of these films have a kiosk rental life longer than three weeks. Redbox is fighting to rent maybe 15 decent Universal titles in all of 2009. Not worth the money or the battle. Pull the plug. Then sit back while Universal goes and competitively cripples itself with some more desperate maneuvers.

I liked the way it was handled. I got mine from Redbox the Wednesday. Only a 1 day delay for me here in San Antonio, TX.

I stopped by a Redbox Friday night and picked up Wanted. It was the fullscreen version, but I quickly forgot about that annoyance as it turned out to be a pretty good movie.

It was available wednesday here in reno, so we rented it then. At least this explains why none of the RB here had it on tuesday.

So, I take it there will be a short delay on Mamma Mia being stocked in the Redbox kiosks. No problem here if I know in advance so as not to make an unnecessary trip to town Tuesday morning. I think Redbox is handling the situation as well as possible. GO REDBOX!!

Yea… Looks like the best bet for universal titles is to check online first. Besides, online I can reserve it and go pick it up later when I’m off work or whatever.

In the mean time… Good luck redbox. We’re rooting for ya.

I was bummed that it was not available and kinda mad at redbox.

But that was before I heard about the dispute with Universal. I am so sorry Redbox that I rented it another overpriced craptastic store. If I knew there was going to be a 1-3 day wait I would have waited. Now that I am informed, I will wait for the box to get it in first.

    And goodluck RB, love ya!

Ended up here after trying to reserve Mamma Mia online.
Was going to rent it, then see if my daughter liked it and then buy it
    for her for Christmas.
I do this a lot, it is worth a buck to see if my kids like a movie enough
to purchase. Now I will NOT be buying it as it irks me that
Universal has removed my ability to “preview” before purchase.

I am really interested in renting Hamlet 2. Now what I dont understand is will redbox only stock this for a short period of time or not at all because it is a universal movie. Every time I search for Hamlet 2 at a redbox or on the website It shows no results.
