Public Media Works is a one-year-old company with big plans in the Redbox-dominated kiosk business. The newcomer has a stated goal of placing 30,000 of its “media filling stations” in high-traffic locations within the next 36 to 40 months. The PMW kiosks, which feature an eye-catching 3D screen that does not require glasses, offer DVDs, Blu-ray discs, games, music and downloadable electronic content for sale or rent. The first locations for these kiosks will be at Pizza Hut locations in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Public Media Works chairman and CEO Garrett Cecchini is ebullient on his company’s future:

“We’re moving the self-service entertainment kiosk into the modern age,”

Cecchini claims that his company has “good access” to content from Hollywood, which he considers an indispensable part of PMW’s business model. Says Cecchini:

“The highest single expense in this business is content. We wouldn’t have gone into it if we didn’t have a pipeline to Hollywood central,”

30,000 installed kiosk is a feat that seven-year-old Redbox has yet to accomplish. What are the chances that this brash new contender will be able to fulfill its ambition?

Let’s see if Public Media Works can install *one* kiosk and perhaps what was not mentioned: a website!

I kind of hope PMW does becomes a player; but talk is cheap!!

    From article…

‘Redbox estimates each of its boxes generates an average of $3,500 a year in DVD rentals and advertising. If Public Media Works reaches its goal of placing 30,000 kiosks within “36 to 40 months,” as Mr. Cecchini hopes to do, that’s $105 million in revenues.’

First lesson in business is to do multiplication and division correctly. I think he means a billion because any kiosk that does $3,500 a year in revenue won’t make a profit – even JS knows this.

Bigger box that does more things misses the point. Part of the elegance of redbox is its speed and simplicity. Less is more and this start-up misses the boat imo.

Besides Pizza Huts in Pittsburgh ain’t gonna sell a whole lot of anything.

Pizza Huts are plentiful & popular& respected in Pittsburgh. Not only are there stand-alone Pizza Huts, but they have them inside Targets also. I thought a few months back there was word that Redbox signed a deal to put their kiosks in Pizza Huts….I guess PMW beat them to it. Actually, I was looking forward to having Redbox inside Pizza Huts, which I have several local Huts, because I figured Redbox would have code promotions with Pizza Hut–and the thought of having a Redbox dvd delivered with your Hut pizza would have been enticing and smart on Redbox’s part.. As far as PMW working towards 30,000 kiosks in the next couple years, by the time they get that many kiosks in place streaming might become the front runner which even Redbox has to start thinking about now. Think it would be a bad investment for PMW to go forward with their idea of 30,000 kiosks….

RB – I grew up in the city too (in Greenfield if you know where that is – near Squirrel Hill). Greensfield is where the middle class yinsers live, Squirrel Hill is where the rich yinsers live.

This has failure written all over it. They are late to the game and trying to be everything to everyone by having DVDs, Blus, games and music is just too much to tackle. You start with one of those and then expand.

This will not get very far in my opinion.

Don’t count out Yum! Brands contribution.

It has access to Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell locations. Collectively, if all these locations had a kiosk, Public Media Works could become a player.

Cute! To digress, the other day in our newspaper there was something about how us ‘yinzers’ welcomed back Big Ben to Steeler training camp! Anyway, I have no local KFC and Taco Bells, though they too are plentiful in other areas that I pass by to go to work, etc. I think if any kiosk business would have exclusive rights to Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell they would make for some real competition against Redbox. My advice: Redbox should not ignore the YINZERS!!!

I don’t think I’m misreading it but it appears this would be kiosk behemoth has about $15,000 in the bank – enough to buy 1 redbox kiosk. Something tells me Yum execs might be a little skeptical about rolling out with them. Only one company can talk about a 30,000 unit rollout and not lose credibility with retail partners.

No disrespect to Pittsburgh intended. Pizza hut is pretty run down from my point of view. Am I behind the times on this?

No disrespect taken…The sit-down Pizza Huts I’ve been to have all been clean, new or remodeled, family-oriented places. Then there are the small ones, inside Target or combined with KFC, or smaller delivery-only storefronts.. I suppose if you go deep in the cities, or to the unruly side of town, the Pizza Huts as well as other businesses in those areas, aren’t as nice/family friendly. Still think Redbox made a mistake by not jumping on the chance to team up with some of these places–especially here in Steeler country where places like Pizza Hut, KFC, LJS, Taco Bell, etc often have Steeler or Penguin promotions (cups, etc) going on. Redbox could have had a lot of Redbox promotions going with these places of business. Not sure why our McDonalds don’t participate in Redbox promotions/have kiosks inside them BUT if another kiosk business , like PMW, makes agreements with say Burger King or McDonalds, or the other business mentioned above in various areas that would be real competition for Redbox.

Just saw that YUM also includes Long John Silvers. I have a local LJS–so bring it on!

I wouldn’t put a lot of credibility into their claims. They are just trying to draft off of Redbox’s success in very much the same way that GameZnFlix tried to use Netflix’s success to promote their failed company.

EntertainmentXpress, their kiosk division that they recently “acquired” was created less than a year ago in a mobile home park according to business records. Their CEO was a big part of ZVUE, another hot and trendy microcap company that ultimately cost investors a lot of money, before coming to public media. Even Redbox would be pushing market saturation once they get to 30,000 kiosks. I think this one is all sizzle, no steak.

in 3 to 4 years i do not even see DVDS being around anymore.

Blu rays and new 3D DVDS players should be hitting the shelf within the next year or two

very little dvds in 2014… Then again the planet goes BOOM IN 2012 anyways ….

WOO there is a DVD machine on every corner.. too bad we dont have the power to play them, L OL

Redbox expanding to CVS stores this year, through 2011
    Published: August 5, 2010

Redbox Automated Retail LLC said Thursday it will roll out its DVD rental kiosks at CVS pharmacy locations nationwide, beginning with about 700 machines this quarter and through December.

The national rollout follows a successfulpilot program at CVS stores, according to a press release by Redbox parent Coin Star Inc. The rollout to thousands of CVS stores is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

Coinstar’s agreement between CVS Caremark Corp. marks the first time CVS will offer a DVD rental service to consumers and significantly expands Redbox’s presence within the drug store channel.

“We’re pleased to add CVS/pharmacy stores to our list of convenient locations for movie lovers to rent films,” said Mitch Lowe, president of Redbox.

A search on CVS.com showed 25 CVS stores in the Scranton area. Redbox is currently available at approximately 23,000 locations nationwide. CVS operates about 7,100 stores nationwide.

I think Redbox will begin consolidating underperforming units and put them at CVS locations.

In their Q2 2010 report, their top retail units were 1) Wal-Mart, 2) Walgreens, 3) McDonalds, 4) Kroger, 5) Supervalu.

Notice that none of them are convenience stores. I think Redbox will relocate some from these like 7-11 to more stable CVS locations.

I don’t think this will get too far. 30,000 kiosks?! Give me a break! Still, I would try it out if any open in my local Pizza Hut, which they might since I live in PA

“…the PMW kiosks, which feature an eye-catching 3D screen that does not require glasses…”

Funny, they should share that technology with the TV makers.
