New DVD-by-Mail Company Launches

download (20)They say fortune favors the bold. New DVD-by-mail service, Vidiux.com, which has just launched, is definitely not lacking in boldness. The company is entering a business that industry giant Netflix is trying to extract itself from, and is not offering a streaming option.

First-time customers pay just 29 cents for their initial rental, which is good for a week. Thereafter, DVD rentals cost .

99 per week and Blu-ray rentals cost $3.49. Vidiux is currently offering about 7,000 titles.

Javier Arroyo-Figueroa, chief executive  officer of Vidiux parent company, Entevia  says that this new service meets a currently untapped consumer need:

“There’s a market segment of customers who always prefer the physical disk over streaming . . . The disadvantages of video streaming are well-known: latency, degraded video quality, lack of features like multiple languages and closed captioning. Also, major players like Netflix and Redbox are sacrificing the rapid availability of new releases in favor of streaming . . . Since Vidiux does not provide streaming, we have no strings attached for providing new releases as soon as they are available.”

Vidiux crowdsources at least some of its disc by encouraging customers to send in their discs and receive a ten percent commission every time their movie is rented. Arroyo-Figueroa also claims that Vidiux will not offer a streaming service for the foreseeable future:

“We don’t plan to expand into streaming, as that would subject us to the same restrictions Netflix and Redbox are facing on new releases — that’s one of our differentiators . . . I’ve seen lines of 10 people waiting for a kiosk to be available, just for returning a movie. Or others want to rent a movie, but have to wait for others to end their kiosk transaction.

It might be really frustrating.”

What do you think about this new company with a near-retro business model? Are they going to be able to compete?

    Mixed feelings about this one…

    Can anyone say ‘Luddite’?

    No blu-ray? ONLY 7000 titles.

    But you know what…

If they can keep costs to a minimum and delivery as promised, Vidiux could make a go of it.

Its an underdog Americans like to root for.. at least I’ll be rooting!

      Vidiux HAS BDs!

Just look for the format selector on the info page. Many of the selections are available.

I will pass for now. But keep a Eye on it. I have NetFlix three out in the mail. And the online deal. I have No Prob with the Closed Caption on NetFlix online. And I don’t see NetFlix dropping the in the mail deal for years on end yet. And IF the caps come on the net use..
More people may start the in the mail again.
    Time will tell.

I’m definitely willing to give them my business. I’m one to favor the hard discs rather than the streaming service. I much prefer getting a DVD in the mail rather than utilizing the streaming service. I totally agree on the benefits the Vidiux.com offers on the hard discs. Once Netflix dumps their DVD mailing service I will be gone as well. A lot of the disc I watch are coming from the library. I really cross my fingers and hope this company does very well. I will support them any way I can.

NetFlix has way to much in on the DVD by mail.
A good 25-30 million people still want the In the mail bit. And Yes! I am one of them.. I have three out at a time. i get 12-13 disc a month.
Yes! I have the Online also..
They have way, way to much into the in the mail to stop.
If they do pull the plug on it. ( I don’t see it). But if they did. it will sink them. With in one year. There will be caps on the net use. Are something like it. And the streaming is going to take a hit.
Try this…………. Do you know that if you stream just one HD movie a day.
In 21-23 days you will be over/pushing 300GB cap Comcast wants to put on. And that is not with any other net use. Think if you had a family of 4/5. You will be over in no time..
          Just saying..

As usual Dano is full of sh1t. They only have approximately 8 million disc subscribers, not the 25 to 30 million that dano says.

And IF??? IF??? the FCC ok’s the Comcast Time Warner deal….
How much you want to bet, that 7,8 million becomes about 12, 13 million. As people will not want to go over the Cap bit….
            And the the shaft bill.

Since when did Netflix offer dvds by mail anywhere else in the world besides the USA, danobunghole.

Even if your wildass scenario played out, and 7 to 8 million turned to 12 or 13 million, it’s still not the 25 to 30 million you claimed.

I am all for a competitive, viable alternative to monopolistic Netflix as far as DVDs by mail are concerned. Whether Vidiux will meet this criteria remains uncertain, especially since, looking at Vidiux’s home page they appear to be directing their adversarial jabs directly at Redbox and not so much at Netflix.

I signed up in an attempt to explore the advantages and disadvantages of Vidiux and to investigate if the movies I want are in their inventory. It was a total strikeout. Except for two future releases that will also be offered by Redbox, each recently released title I searched for came up a no-go. In order to compete with Netflix by mail, it is essential to carry the highly acclaimed but obscure movies that Netflix routinely offers. This holds especially true if brand-b’s subscription price is higher than the rate charged by Netflix. Incidentally, the biggest problem with Redbox is not the long lines at their kiosks but a lack of quality movies to choose from.

Additionally, if Vidiux is superiorly customer service oriented (like Netflix once was) there is no indication of it just based on their website.

Finally, the Vidiux website doesn’t appear to have all the bugs out of it yet. I had login problems directly after joining. The difficulty was easily corrected after changing my password.

I would like Vidiux (or a similar company) to succeed. Netflix has grown arrogant over the years. It is my view that Netflix has taken their loyal customers for granted. A stiff dose of healthy, free-market competition remains the best attempt for a remedy.

I am willing to give Vidiux a chance to prove and improve itself.

Sounds good to me. I’ve always hated the idea of paying Netflix every month, whether I use it or not.
