3G iPad owners who use Netflix and other streaming apps to view video may soon be paying more for the privilege. Beginning on June 7, AT&T is changing its data plans and eliminating the unlimited data option.

The original iPad data plans came in two flavors: 250 megabytes for $15 or unlimited data for $30. Under the new plans, users will pay $15 a month for 200 megabytes of data or $25 a month for 2 gigabytes of data. Users who exceed their plans’ monthly limit will be charged an additional $15 per 200 megabytes or $10 per additional gigabyte, depending on their plan. Current AT&T customers will not be required to switch to the new plans.

According to CNN Money, “For Netflix subscribers using the new iPad app, 2 GB of data will only get them between six and 12 hours of streaming movies and TV shows, depending on the bit rate Netflix used . . . That works out to between three and six two-hour movies, or between four and eight one-and-a-half hour movies a month.”

AT&T is claiming that fewer than 2 percent of its customers use an average of 2 GB or more each month. Chris Riley, policy counsel for net neutrality advocate Free Press, says that won’t be the case for long:

“While AT&T asserts that its high-end 2 GB cap will only impact the heaviest users, the fact is that today’s heavy user is tomorrow’s average user,”

Insiders who own or plan to own a 3G iPad, what do you think of the new pricing plans? Will the 2 gigabyte plan be sufficient for your video viewing needs, or will these new plans cost you more in the long run?

One thing to mention is that if you already have a data plan or get the data plan by midnite tonite, you will be grandfathered into the plan

I was planning to buy an iPad 3G. I’m going to have to wait to see if Apple will provide other options (carriers).

Let’s just put it this way, if it wasn’t PROFITABLE for AT&T they would NOT be changinf the plan.
    END OF STORY!!!!

I would have already bought an Ipad but they weren’t available for a couple of weeks! I wanted it right then. Now I can’t get it in time and so I lose out on the unlimited plan! I do not like that At&t is doing this. I hate plans when you can’t get unlimited. Why don’t they just charge an extra $5.00 so we have a choice! Probably won’t be getting the Ipad now.

I just heard about this from Lamar Wilson’s video on Youtube. This is just a big money making scheme. Now I’m glad that I don’t own an ipad or iphone
