Should Netflix’s streaming be more accurately described as a trickle?

As Netflix continues to focus more on its streaming offering and less on its by-mail program, it becomes ever more imperative that the company keeps its streaming catalog constantly expanding. That may not be the case, according to an article on The Street.
Despite a series of deals with studios exchanging a 28-day window on new releases for increased access to digital content, the streaming titles may not be flowing to Netflix as quickly as the company, its customers and its investors would like.

According to The Street:
“In January of 2008, Netflix confirmed it had about 12,000 titles available for streaming. In September of 2009, ads on their website put that number at 17,000. Today, it appears that Netflix has about 20,000 titles for streaming, although Netflix won’t confirm that number for me. If that number is accurate, it means that Netflix has only added about 4,000 movies a year for the past two years. That’s not a lot of content.”

As a supplier for Netflix (low-budget indie horror & cult flicks), I can tell you that part of the problem is they drop titles that aren’t performing up to their standards — which means they’ve likely added far more than 4k titles in the past 2 years, but the number appears smaller because they’re dropping other titles.
They’ve also gotten quite picky about what they take in the first place, favoring the Hollywood studios (naturally) and leaving small companies like mine mostly in the lurch. Sad because we were one of the first companies to sign up for their streaming initiative well before it launched, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles I guess…
I own two Roku boxes and while netflix is great, and I love the new british TV series they’ve added over the past 6 months (Primeval, Torchwood, etc). However, I do find myself going over to Amazon VOD more frequently than I used to.
I knew when Netflix signed the 28 day delay. It would not workout for Netflix. It is for the studio’s but not them.
OH…boo, hoo…..only TWENTY THOUSAND titles to choose from on NETFLIX..!!! We are a PATHETIC society.when we have 20,000 titles to choose from, and we WHINE & MOAN about it. Oh….and did anyone happen to FORGET that NETFLIX is a movie through the mail rental company, and, that the streaming video is a FREE BONUS..!! GET OVER IT you bunch of LOOOOOOOOOOOSERS.

Yes, and while there are over 20K title… how many of them are movies that appeal to the growing use of this generation or any generation for that fact… Seriously! —- I love older movies and such but I also would like more of a variety of movies to stream than wait for a DVD. I use the DVD and all that but I stream more than anything else and the variety of those 20,000 isnt all that good.
Bryan is right…streaming is a FREE bonus for Netflix subscribers and I really like it better than when it first launched(It loads much faster than it used to). The only drawback is it usually stops halfway through your movie/TV show and goes to “Receiving” mode. I’m not complaining though…they could just as easily turn around and charge for it. Let’s see here…NF streaming titles via the Wii=20,000…BB By Mail streaming titles via the Wii-ZERO. Some is much better than none at all folks!
When it goes into streaming mode, hit the refresh button and the movie will start where it left off much quicker!
they need to get off their asses and provide closed captioning for all their streaming titles….
I have to agree with Anthony…the ONLY reason I have Netflix is for streaming …and it’s a great add-on to the snail mail movie delivery mode…however, I really enjoy the BBC and National Geographic offerings, and I NEED the closed captioning

I am just waiting for Netflix to convert completely to streaming. I don’t like having to choose, wait, mail, wait.
I would prefer a 100% streaming service. Right now that’s not possible, since so much of the content is not available via streaming. What’s ridiculous is that content that was added is later dropped.
Frankly the only reason I joined netflix was because of the streaming. Oh boohoo you say?? Simply put, some of us don’t get cable or pay for satellite and this is a better deal.
Half the time the DVD’s I get are scratched and won’t play. Why do I have to wait to get a new one in the mail to watch a current movie?? Why can’t they offer them streaming?
As for “only 20,000 titles,” let’s face it how many of those titles are current? Granted I’ve found some very good movies, but having to wait to get Disney movies that have been out for over 10 years on DVD instead of streaming them is a bit ridiculous…

The price for Netflix did not change when streaming was added. They are not charging more for it.

Wow 20,000 is now considered a pathetic number? What ever happened to expectations? I’m fine with it. It’s definitely better now then it was 2 years ago when they had a bunch of crap out there. I’m more interested in quality then quantity.
The other issue with Netflix and streaming is with some titles, you get 80-90% of the episodes of some series, and then some episodes will say disc only.. why bother to stream the others if you cannot deliver them all

Steve-T, you are wrong. Streaming is included FREE. I’ve been a subscriber since the streaming to the Wii started and still pay the same amount now as I did before.

Concerning Netflix, if they are getting a new release, it should be on DVD, Blu-Ray, and High Definition streaming. I’ll pay for just streamed content if they decide to price it that way. My sister blows through $20 easily a month on Redbox but I will not watch DVD on a 60 inch plasma, that asinine. Yes, I want a Blu-Ray player but Netflix cards at a retailer are only priced for DVD+Streaming. I wish they would have the cards priced at +$3 for those who want Blu-Ray, not DVD, mailed to the home+Streaming. I am almost considering just setting up a personal movie budget where I would stream movies directly from Xbox Live. At least Redbox has Blu-Ray now in my area, thank goodness. 77034 zip code.
Due to the fact most of all the movies I watch are in standard definition, I went ahead and dropped the extra price Netflix charges for blu-ray. I now rent blu-ray only from Redbox. I really don’t understand why there is a 1 month delay for new releases, it just seems to me, the sooner a new release is watched, the sooner one might want to buy it after they have watched it.
