HBO is doing in Scandinavia what many consumers wish it would do stateside: launching a streaming-only service that’s not connected to its pay-TV channel.

Netflix’s outspoken CEO Reed Hastings, who has for years been rebuffed in his entreaties to add HBO content to his streaming service, has some fightin’ words for his competitor.

HBO Nordic will be launching in the middle of October in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Subscribers will pay a flat fee to access HBO streaming content without the requirement to also subscribe to the channel.

Netflix has announced its own expansion in to Scandinavia, which means the two services will be going toe-to-toe in the Nordic countries of Europe.

Hastings got a dig in at HBO on his Facebook page, saying the following:

“Excited to see HBO join us in offering standalone streaming service in Scandinavia…what about the USA? We thought the first match-up would be in Albania.”

The Albania reference refers to a famous comment by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes back in 2010 dismissing Netflix’s merits as a competitor.

An HBO spokesperson poured cold water on the hopes of consumers wishing the same streaming-only option would become available in the U.S. any time soon:

“Each market is unique and HBO approaches each one with what we consider to believe the best business model specific to that territory.”

How will the streaming battle that’s shaping up in Scandinavia turn out, Insiders? Will HBO reconsider its reluctance to bring a streaming-only option to America?

It’s the stronghold cable companies hold with them. It’s too lucrative for them to let go and have to get them to agree to let them offer a separate service. It will probably happen eventually, but for now I’m ok with buying True Blood or whatever show I want and I got Satellite so I use the deals to sign up when a show is on I watch because the movies no longer matter

Yeah! I’m the same way!! Gave up cable all together. I only use redbox now!! Who needs them!!! HBO only plays the same crap over and over 2 years can go by and they’re rerunning the same crap! I can live without them!! When we want a movie it’s redbox also. No big EE for us either. I gave them all up 2009!! I don’t miss them and don’t plan on signing up with dish/cable any time soon!

Seriously? First off, Mr Hastings shouldn’t be shooting his mouth off about ANYTHING. Netflix is barely afloat. Everytime I check, less movies are available and less movies are added. I woun’t even mention their “less than knowledgeable” customer service.

2nd of all, Outside of HBO’s “original programming” like True Blood and such, HBO’s play list is exactly the same old movies that are available on Netflix.

If HBO was smart, they would drop their price by dropping the old movies library/licenses and just play their own content… for they have 30 years of it. That would entice more subscribers.

bart927….You obviously have no knowledge of Netflix. They keep adding so many, many tv shows and movies that I just can’t keep up with them and I am retired and watch Netflix for hours every day. Dumkoff !!

Really? Mr. quick to judge? I’ve been a member of Netflix since 2007 and since then have witnessed many titles just drop off of my queue, as if they were never there, never to be seen again. (and I have screenshots to prove it)

I’ve have had titles be on the everlasting “long wait list”, never to make it to my doorstep.

I also have searched for titles that have been out on DVD for a while, that Netflix doesn’t carry…

and lastly, I was one of the customers that was screwed when they decide to split the DVDs and streaming into 2 separate services for 2 different prices… with titles that not available for streaming, yet are available on DVD , and titles are not available on DVD are available for streaming… so I think my experiences and research make me more than qualified in the “Knowledgeable” area.
