If you seem to be watching more TV show episodes and fewer movies on Netflix, you’re not alone.

A new report from Nielsen has revealed that Netflix users are spending more of their time watching TV shows than they used to, and this shift is coming at the expense of films.

Nielsen is reporting that 19 percent of survey respondents reported a preference for TV programming on Netflix, which is an increase of eight percent in just one year. Respondents who say they primarily stream movies declined six percent to 47%.

Nielsen said the following in a blog post:

“The increase comes in the wake of Netflix not just inking partnerships to re-air programming, but also jumping feet first into production themselves, rolling out original content, like the eight-episode ‘Lilyhammer,’”

With Netflix’s streaming movie catalog leaving something to be desired while its TV content offering is fairly robust, is this news surprising at all? How do your Netflix viewing habits compare to those of the Nielsen survey respondents?

I watch old Movies on NetFlix Online. 95% of the new Movies are trash, and Remake Crap.
I have Block Buster two out at a time. And Netflix Online. I cut the Cable. Only two shows I watch.. And I will pick them up when they hit DVD. Why pay for 95% trash TV…

You are correct. I picked the same number, 95%, pure trash, it doesen’t have anyting to do with (ie) sex necessarily, it’s just a trash culture, the US has given up its Judeo-Christian principles, and it reflected in the culture. Go into a restaurant/store, most are dirty, trashy.

American is trending to a low class culture, that is to worship the trashy, and mediocre, and attack high standards. That new trend is now reflected in “films”.

Its all about the woman that can attack an entire group of special forces and win without a scratch, as well as jump from building to building without problems while attacking men for thier low IQ.

The real acting is gone; remember the paradoy, ABU (All blowed Up), most of films are about either a woman attacking men or car crashes, explosions, it requires no intellect to participate. No thinking required.

We were told it took 22 years to build a runway at an airport in Atlanta in our time frame; before my time, but it would have taken the Corps of Engineers 3 days in 1940. These worthless films are just a reflection of the new American trash culture, and our growing inability to do anything as a country.

Very disappointed with the movie options recently. I am among the TV watchers myself. Would like to see more recent airings though. Give Hulu a run for their money. Would even pay an additional upcharge to watch next day through my DVD player as long as it was less than Hulu if combined…

    This is the future.

Movies? TV? What’s the difference? It’s all about streaming!

What will be cool if the “Lilyhammer” series makes it to DVD distribution.

There aren’t many new, recent blockbuster movies. I’ve caught up on some from the past few years I’ve missed (Lost In Translation, Spotless Mind), but have been disppointed at the pace with which they pick up newer movies, if at all.

In all fairness, Netflix is oriented considerably toward tv anyway. They have a very small movie selection comparatively.

I mean that’s like a report that most people who go to Men’s Wearhouse buy suits. They sell other clothes too, but mostly suits, so it makes sense that would be their best seller.

I am very disappointed with the streaming movies. I’m not one to watch old TV series. I think I’ll dump Netflix, they never should have split their services in two. Take a look at the stock price since they did that. This will mean less money for new movies.

I love the Netflix movies. They have soooooooo many I just don’t have the time to watch them all!!! I don’t watch the newer tv shows. I don’t think they are very good. I do watch MURDER SHE WROTE, AMAZING STORIES, all the DOCUMENTARIES. Yes, I know I was shouting !!!!!!
    I still love Redbox !!!

People are watching more television shows on Netflix because its movie catalog has been getting weaker as its TV catalog grows.

I’d much rather watch old movies I haven’t seen, than old TV shows I have.
About the only TV show I watch on Netflix, is the UK’s “Top Gear.”

If I could get more fresh foreign content – movie or TV – I would watch that.

I agree with pretty much everyone. Netflix movie offerings are crap. People would rather invest 25-45 minutes to check out a new TV show episode than waste 2 hours on a movie that they’ve already seen and didn’t like the first time. Amazon Prime movie offerings are quite a bit better. Especially as a parent of young children, almost every newer movie on Netflix is rated R.
