This is an interesting idea. Netflix, which has long been criticized for the lack of closed captioning in much of its streaming content, is experimenting with crowdsourcing to help address the issue.

Netflix has launched a subtitling community project on video captioning service Amara.

The project solicits a limited number of volunteers to try using crowd-sourced captioning with a “popular 80s cartoon and other classic TV programming,”

Amara lets users transcribe videos using an online editor, and claims that its community has subtitled more than 100,000 videos thus far.

A Netflix spokesperson said the following about the new test:

“Netflix is committed to accessibility and we have decided to test Amara to see if it could work for Netflix content. This is a small scale, early stage test. It is premature to discuss if we would actually use the titles resulting from this test or any future use of Amara.

What do you think, Insiders? Is this a relatively quick and cost-effective way for Netflix to address its closed captioning problem?

NetFlix has over 2,000 Movies and TV shows online now with CC on them. And more are coming everyday. They are doing much better then they were at one time. If they can do it more cost-effective with Amara.. Go for it. Time will tell.
But really 2,000 + movies and TV shows with CC on them online is not bad at all.
    A great great start!

I wouldn’t mind helping caption some of the films or tv shows. What is irritating to me is when through my Wii system I can get CC but using My blu-ray player I cannot …
