netflix-logoNetflix released its first quarter numbers today, which should get fans of the entertainment company pretty excited. Netflix added four million subscribers this quarter, and also surpassed $1 billion in revenue for the first time.

Earnings per share increased t0 $0.86, and Netflix now stands at 46 million subscribers, with more than 34 million in the U.

Another huge announcement was that of an imminent price increase for new subscribers, to be followed at a yet-to-be-determined interval by a general price hike.

Said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings:

“Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only . . . Existing members would stay at current pricing (e.g. $7.99 in the U.S.) for a generous time period.”

How long do you think that “generous time period” will last? If Netflix pricing goes up a buck or two a month, would that be a dealbreaker for you?

Not a deal breaker – but any price increase isn’t welcome news. Still far cheaper than a cable bill.

Yes, it’s still a bargain compared to a cable bill. But the thing is, for many it’s an add-on, not a substitute for cable. When I’m already paying a cable bill I’m only willing to pay a tiny bit more for a service like netflix. I tend to sign up if I want to watch something, watch whatever I want for the rest of the month, then cancel again. Even at the current $7.99 I don’t pay for it every month. I’ve paid or 2 years of Netflix in the last year. If I could talk my wife into dropping DirecTV, then I’d probably go all in on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon.

I wonder how many people would be willing to cancel their cable (and live with services like Netflix and Hulu) if they were willing to live without the sports programming available on cable?

I have cut the cord 7 months ago. I have Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime and Redbox Streaming. Approx $30 a month. I have over 10,000 dvd’s and 800 blu-ray. I also use the public library for dvd’s and blu-rays. I have a smart tv, Roku box and my computer is hooked to my TV. Love my satup. Do not plan on going back. I am ready for the apocalypse.

$1 or $2 I wouldn’t even think about leaving. They know the price point is still fine.

I believe Netflix is a bargain and $1 or $2 more won’t be a deal breaker.

It wouldn’t be a deal breaker but let’s look at the numbers above do they really need to increase the price

I gave up cable over 2years ago, just have Netflix & Amazon. I have 3 kids 18yrs old and under, and there’s been no complaints. I would not mind paying another $1 or 2, still WAY LESS than cable.

Not a deal breaker, but if they’re making such high profits why punish subscribers by raising prices?

I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Target Ticket and Budd (pay per view). Tried Hill and Redbox Instant but the value didn’t justify the added cost.

The generous grace period is probably 120 days or less. A one or two dollar price increase will not drive me away, but they need to look at the satisfaction of their customers more so than the satisfaction of their Board of Directors.

If they are making so much money, why do they need to be greedy and raise prices? I guess that they have to follow the path of oil companies — raise prices a little each few months and soon they are charging twice what they are and subscribers start looking at their bills again! God help the consumers!

No big deal. I have been with Netflix years on end. I have three out in the mail.
And the online deal. And the Warner Bros online deal. All going to my Home Theater. With a 8 Ft wide 4 Ft high screen And a nice projector. In the main room.
And my 55″ LED TV in the other room. And I have my BlueRay set ups. And my Old 12″ Laser Disc set ups. More then I can ever watch.. All for about $35.00 a month. I stopped going to the show years back. The price to get in. Out of control people/kids. Joe Blow on the cell phone. Going 90. Last weeks Pop Corn. Water Cokes. No thanks. And about 90% of the movies are crap anyway..
NetFlix. Warner Brothers. And RedBox… Home is where it is at….

Listen people, telling Netflix that a price increase is not a deal breaker will only encourage Netflix to raise prices more. You need to moan and groan. Remember when you could get DVDs AND streaming for $7.99 just a few years ago?

The thing is… NetFlix will need to pay more to keep the stuff they have online.
And also get new stuff. Also NetFlix will lose a ton of stuff over the next few years. As Warner Bros will not be renewing anything with Netflix. As they now have there own online deal. For $9.99 a month.
Also NetFlix is getting ready to fight the ComCast/Time Warner deal.
And that deal will happen. As the Idiots on the hill have been payed off. To ok it.
When ComCast takes over Time Warner. Then the fun will really start.
Your bill will go up 25-30%. And then they will put a cap on your net. And then if you watch 3 movies on NetFlix,RedBox, Amazon. You will be over your cap. And Zip. You will get it in the kisser good.
Everything is going up. And things are going to change soon.
You watch. In the next 4 to 6 months. ComCast will have Time Warner.
And they will tell you how good things are going to be.. And then Shi% will hit the fan. I hope I am WRONG! But I bet not!

Even a $2.00 per month increase is only $24.00 per year, and $240.00 over ten years.

Look a cable bill of $100.00 per month: $1,200 per year and (fasten your seat belts) $12,000 in ten years.
Whereas even with a $2.00 increase with Netflix it would only be $120 per year and $1,200 for ten years. THAT IS 1/10 OF THE COST OF CABLE!

I cut the cord years ago; Have Netflix, an HD Broadcast Antenna and Roku Box, but mostly watch Netflix.

      One thing everyone…..
Like all kinds of people. I cut the Cable TV out years back.
And use NetFlix. Warner Bros. RedBox. Amazon…
      But! But!
90% of us still use the Cable for the Net. And they have got you but the ball’s.
As soon as the ConCast/Time Warner deal goes through. And it will.
They will then put Caps on the net use. And you will be over the cap in no time.
And they will up the net price by a good 25-35%.
Then we all will be right back to A…
      Getting the A$$ shaft again…

I cut the cable last year, I have an antenna on my roof that cost $39, Netflix, Amazon Prime and a dedicated HTPC for recording over the air shows and streaming, (ALL HD) I tried hulu plus, but don’t really think its worth it, they have little to no CBS shows, they only keep something like the last 6 or so episodes of the new network shows, most of which you can stream directly from the internet anyway, the only thing I can’t do is watch the latest episode (unless I have it recorded). I think I could wait a week. I really like the ability to watch what I want and when I want. Cable bills are only a faint memory for me.
P.S. I stayed at a friends house that has cable recently and found that after midnight infomercials dominate most of the channels people are paying for!

Netflix provides the best service in regards to home entertainment for me. I cancelled my cable 3 years ago because I spend more time streaming and renting dvd’s from Netflix.. I love Netflix not just for streaming content, but for also keeping the physical dvd rental business going. I can rent blockbusters, indies, concerts..basically I can rent the physical dvd of just about any dvd that I’d normally have to buy…especially odd, niche titles. Raising prices a buck or two won’t drive away my business. And now the original programming such as “Orange is the new black” makes them even more of a fabulous service. Loyal customer since 2002

No large deal. I’ve been with Netflix years on finish. I’ve three in the mail.

I ended visiting the show in the past. The cost to go into. Unmanageable people/kids. Joe Blow around the mobile phone. Going 90. Last days Pop Corn. Water Cokes. No thanks. Contributing to 90% from the movies are garbage anyway..
