imagesWhen TV rating research firm Nielsen recently announced that it would begin tracking viewership of Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other online streaming services, many wondered how 900-pound industry gorilla Netflix would respond. We didn’t have to wait long, as Netflix’s outspoken CEO, Reed Hastings, has weighed in on the matter.

Hastings says that Nielsen’s tracking will be incomplete, as it won’t account for portable devices.

Nielsen claims that it will address this issue before launching its service next year. Said Hastings:

“It’s not very relevant. There’s so much viewing that happens on a mobile phone or an iPad that [Nielsen wouldn’t] capture,”

Do you think Netflix will finally be forced to reveal the real viewership numbers for House of Cards and Orange is the New Black? Or is Hastings right and will Nielsen’s numbers be skewed?

Who cares what Nielsen has to say.
I can care less what the ratings are. I watch what I want and like.
    No big deal…

If the Nielsen ratings are bad, the show will be cancelled and you won’t be able to watch it – that’s kind of a big deal.

the Nielsen ratings are already fairly inaccurate – Netflix has a point but since it’s the accepted standard, they pretty much have to work with it.

You think Netflix doesn’t know how many time they’ve streamed it? They don’t need Nielsen to tell them that. This only matters because the owners of other shows leased to Netflix will have more info when renewal time comes around.

          Well said. And 100% right…
And the owners of the TV Shows/Movies that get streamed all the time..
They will kick up the price when the time comes to renew them. And about 75% of them will be dropped if the renew price is to much…
And Netflix will pick up new stuff…

The ratings system is to see what other people watch. I don’t care what other people watch. My viewing tastes are different from other people. I watch what I want to watch and I prefer not to be tracked.
