175_90_NetflixNetflix CEO Reed Hastings is never shy about his opinion, and sometimes uses his company’s blog to share his thoughts with the world. Hastings recently took to the Netflix blog to rail against ISPs’ recent interest in charging his company additional fees for direct access.

Netflix and Comcast have already struck such a deal, and Verizon has not been quiet about the fact that it thinks it deserves the same treatment. Hastings is sounding the alarm on this type of behavior, and is especially worried about startups and smaller internet streaming companies:

“If this kind of leverage is effective against Netflix, which is pretty large, imagine the plight of smaller services today and in the future . . . Roughly the same arbitrary tax is demanded from the intermediaries such as Cogent and Level 3, who supply millions of websites with connectivity, leading to a poor customer experience.

Hastings also reiterated his earlier stance that ISPs are really shooting themselves in the foot if they try to disrupt net neutrality:

“Though they have the scale and power to do this, they should realize it is in their long-term interest to back strong net neutrality . . . While in the short term Netflix will in cases reluctantly pay large ISPs to ensure a high-quality member experience, we will continue to fight for the Internet the world needs and deserves.

Consider that a warning shot, Verizon and other companies hungry for direct access deals with Netflix. With this battle just heating up, which side is going to prevail, and where will consumers end up?
