Netflix Arrives in Cuba

imagesCuba is a relatively isolated country where only about five percent of the population has access to unfiltered internet and the average monthly wage hovers around the $20 mark. Netflix has apparently looked at this market and said, “Sí!

Netflix hopes that its Cuban entertainment fare, which is similar to the content offered in other Latin American countries, will help grow the company’s viewership “as Internet access improves and credit and debit cards become more widely available.”

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the following about his company’s expansion into the island:

“We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world . . . Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members.

Is this a wise business move from Netflix, or just a savvy PR strategy?

I will give it 5 to 10 years and NetFlix will be World wide..
Everyplace.. And I will give it 7-10 years and it will be streaming only..
Nothing Zip in the mail. And DVD’s as we know them will be gone.
Yes I still love my disc in my hand. But Time Moves On..
And DVD’S will go the way Laser Disc did…

Netflix in Cuba??? Am glad to hear you were able to offer the Cuban people the opportunity to view movies yet less than 5% will ever see them and wouldn’t be able to afford the membership. Sadly, the economic situation needs to improved before they can enjoy any entertainment primarily from the internet service that is prohibited to the majority of the people with the exception of the government. Let’s hope we can offer them more than Entertainment! Food and Health would be my top choice over entertainment. I suppose keeping them entertained they won’t miss the popcorn….. nice try.

The Government will run it… And again you are right… 95% of the people can’t afford it I bet…
So it will be for the Government & the rich…
I will give it about a year. And NetFlix may find it’s not worth it… And pull out.. ????
