Netflix Announces Big Subscriber Growth

imagesNetflix announced its fourth quarter financials today, and investors were pleasantly surprised.

Netflix beat its own forecast of 4 million new subscribers by adding 4.33 million in the final quarter of the year. Netflix’s global subscriber total is now closing in on 60 million.

Even in the midst of ever-increasing global streaming competition, Netflix is confident that it will continue to set the pace.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the following:

“Internet TV is growing globally and Netflix is leading the charge,”

Hastings also shrugged off suggestions that its $1 price increase the previous quarter negatively affected subscriber growth, which was disappointing compared to this latest quarter:

“We’ve found our growth in net adds is strongest in the lower income areas of the US, which would not be the case if there was material price sensitivity . . . Additionally, we implemented a similar price change in Mexico during Q4, and saw no detectable change in net additions.”

Who can stand up to the Netflix juggernaut? Amazon? Hulu? Some other upstart?

I’ll get it when they don’t do subscriptions and do on demand payments like iTunes, Amazon, etc.
