According to a press release put out by Marriott, “Guests staying at select Marriott Hotels will be able to subscribe to Netflix or sign into their existing accounts simply by using the Netflix app on the hotel’s internet-connected guest room televisions.

This new agreement is the first of its kind and will likely open the doors for similar deals between streamers and hotel chains. Matthew Carroll, vice president of brand management with Marriott Hotels, said the following about the new deal:

“Our collaboration with Netflix responds to changing consumer preferences in the way our guests access and watch content, while recognizing the leading role Netflix is playing in driving this transformation . . . Because consumers are choosing to take their streaming content with them when they travel, Marriott Hotels is making the industry’s first rollout of Netflix a priority.”

Would this new perk make you more likely to stay at a Marriott hotel, Insiders?

Marriott International and all of its brands ranks very well. I never had a BAD experience.

but it’s doubtful ANYONE would make a decision based SOLELY on Netflix subscription availability. Usually, there are few if any choices as to lodging choices.

Streaming is the sign of the times with the take it with you becoming the trend given the small size and powerful technology which is key to portable entertainment option. Just took my media center on trip, works flawless in any hotel, so saved even more not needing the usual pay to play hotel TV programming, so Marriott is smart to jump on this new trend.

Hotels spend a lot of money to prevent people from using their TVs for anything other than their useless, overpriced paid offerings. So far, I have been often able to hook up to their A/V or HDMI ports my camcorder or laptop, but many are locked out. However, their days are numbered – now that HD projection devices are becoming compact and cheap, it will be a short time before portable devices come with built-in projectors, thus enabling us to show video on a large screen (wall). There is already a camcorder with a built-in projector (the Sony HDRPJ260V is $400); tablets and phones will soon follow.

The nicer hotels need to do these small things to separate themselves from each other, Hilton was the first with flat screens. Also give us another reason to gripe about cheaper hotels. Personally, I take a box with me, and if I happen to stay in one that hasn’t upgraded to flat screens yet (for some reason a lot haven’t) I take a 32 inch with me.
