downloadHave you complained about the cost of a night out at the movies lately? According to the Motion Picture Association of America, you really shouldn’t be.

MPAA CEO Chris Dodd recently stated that besides “listening to music or watching free TV programming” at home, going to the movies is “most affordable, accessible form of entertainment” out there.

Dodd claims that their relative cheapness compared to other entertainment options allows movie theaters “to draw more people than all theme parks and major sporting events combined” worldwide. Said Dodd:

“It has never been a better time to be a consumer of movies and TV . . . Because movies matter — to more people, in more places, who want to watch them at more times, across multiple platforms — the film and television industry is continuously innovating to meet that demand,”

Dodd also went on to proclaim that we are entering a new era of quality in our entertainment:

“I’m not exaggerating when I say a new golden age in television and film is being ushered in . . . You can watch more content than ever, through more channels, and the quality of the movies and TV shows is outstanding.”

Time for you to weigh in, Insiders? Do you consider a night at the movies “affordable” and “accessible?

Somebody’s really desperate to justify prices. I bet he’s never taken a family of 6 to a movie. Not only is it expensive, but it’s rare when there’s actually a good, safe movie to take the kids to. And most TV is garbage, as well, since he brought it up. We’ve canceled our satellite subscription and just watch what we want to on a Roku box.

I agree. I choose not to have cable or satellite in favor of my Apple TV box. I’m in full control of what I want to watch and when I want to watch it. Going to the movie theater costs way too much for what you are getting especially when taking the family out.

Agree with all of the above and I’m a Roku fan too. My Netflix queue on Roku is over 70 films already. All those titles interest me, few of which ever made it to the local movie theaters.

I’ll pay for live jazz at a club or jazz fest; that’s money well-spent. I remember those shows long after I’ve forgotten so-so movies.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to see a major live sporting event, but I attend minor-league baseball occasionally. Half the price of a movie ticket and often free on special nights! And I can buy a beer and get real food for a fair price.

Agreed. Money’s tight, so why not just grab that so-so movie that might be worth watching from Redbox for a buck and a half for 4 people (or free with a code!), or stream a show on Netflix. Watch it without having to leave your house, with your own popcorn, snacks, and drinks.

The only way we go out to movies anymore is if we can get free (or near free) tickets… with a DVD purchase, off a cereal box, whatever. Can’t justify spending $30 to $40 of my hard earned money to buy tickets for a 90 minute movie for the wife and kids, for most of the garbage that is released. Wait a couple of months and rent!

I have a 107? projection screen and a huge sound system at home. With that setup, I can come close to a theater. But the theater experience still can’t be replicated exactly, so I still enjoy going to the theater from time to time (choosing titles carefully, so as to maximize my entertainment dollar).

With that said, comparing a movie theater to an amusement park? Seriously? Unlike being able to watch the exact same movie at home as can be seen in a theater, there isn’t a home alternative that is even close to offering the multi-million dollar rides that an amusement park has. Also, sporting events are a LIVE, one time, real time event. There is no close alternative that can provide that euphoric experience home, theater, or otherwise.

Chris Dodd was an asshole as a Senator and now he is an even bigger one as a Lobbyist.

Nope, not spending for one movie what I can get for one month on Netflix. I’ve watched 5 movies on N’flix this month and the nice thing is–if I don’t like it, I can just shut it off and not be out $9. Go away, Chris Dodd.

I got everything I need for under $30.00.. A Buck a day.. Can’t beat it..
      Be well. DanoFive0.

Just keep in mind that Chris Dodd was in Congress for a long time. Enough said about his ability to be truthful. This is a joke.
