MPAA CEO: We Must Adapt

The times, they are a changin’, and the Motion Picture Association of America, stodgy as it can be, realizes it.

So said MPAA CEO Chris Dodd at CinemaCon in Las Vegas today.

In his remarks, Dodd acknowledged that today’s younger consumers have become accustomed to consuming their media across a variety of screen sizes, especially tablets. According to Dodd, the MPAA needs to earn the business of today’s viewer by melding the classic movie-watching experience with advancing technology. Said Dodd:

“Our business has become much more than simply making a great movie and inviting our customers to a theater . . . This new age of the connected consumer is here, and so we must adapt.

Dodd also praised the National Association of Theater Owners for using social media and digital theater technology to lure tech-savvy consumers into the cineplex. As for the millions of people who have simply stopped going to the movies, Dodd simply said, “We need to bring them back,”

Have you reduced or ended your trips to the theater in favor of other, cheaper alternatives, Insiders? If so, is there anything that Dodd and his organization could do to bring you back?

Bring theater prices back to under $5 (and no ‘upcharges’ for 3D!), bring back BIG screens and 70mm, NO commercials or onscreen ads of any kind, fire any theater managers and employees who don’t like what they’re doing and start a zero-tolerance policy for customers talking unnecessarily during the movies. More people will come and more often, offsetting any lower prices.

Like many who will never go back, its too late to make changes that will change the zeitgeist. Why? because home [and portable] theater outweighs all the advantages of the public theater experience.

Its only nostalgic to remember the ‘good old days’, much like my youth, when “going-out-to-the-movies” was an enjoyable experience.

I completely agree with Smithee, but the sad fact is we live in a society where they will never go “back”. Once they’ve gotten the revenue streams from the commercials they would NEVER decide to not have them. I think some theater chains may adopt lower prices, however I think it would be with MORE commercials and pre-movie money for them. I also agree with the people working at the theaters, most of them don’t really want to be there……but there you go…..pay somebody minimum and get what you get, or hire somebody at a decent wage and get better service…..I think they’ll prefer the cheaper route.

If Dodd and the other idiots at the MPAA are really serious about adapting they’ll drop the DRM game that they can’t possibly win. I’m not holding my breath.
