The desire to own entertainment content over renting it may be becoming a thing of the past even more quickly than previously thought, if one analyst is to be believed.
BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield expects that purchases of physical and digital content will account for 49 percent of consumer spending this year, which would represent a drop of two percent from 2012 and represent a tipping point. Rental spending hasn’t outpaced purchases since the early 2000s when consumers began to amass large DVD collections.
Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Corp. of America and Sony Pictures Entertainment, concurs with Greenfield’s assessment that owning content is quickly becoming passe for consumers. Said Lynton:
“It’s more about access to content . . . People are breaking the emotional hold of ‘I have to have own it if I consume it.’ Once it shifts, a lot changes and it is happening pretty quickly.”

I still like to buy some good DVD movies. And some good TV shows on DVD…
But like most, I buy very little now. Just things I really really want.. And most are Old TV shows are a few new TV shows.
I guess I was ahead of my time. I never bought DVDs (or VHS before that). The local BB was always available for anything I couldn’t find on cable/internet. The only ‘collection’ I have is a bunch of well-worn Barney VHS tapes…
I have a 107″ projection screen and a huge sound system at home. With that setup, I can come close to a theater. But the theater experience still can’t be replicated exactly, so I still enjoy going to the theater from time to time (choosing titles carefully, so as to maximize my entertainment dollar).
With that said, comparing a movie theater to an amusement park? Seriously? Unlike being able to watch the exact same movie at home as can be seen in a theater, there isn’t a home alternative that is even close to offering the multi-million dollar rides that an amusement park has. Also, sporting events are a LIVE, one time, real time event. There is no close alternative that can provide that euphoric experience home, theater, or otherwise.

Since I almost never want to watch the same movie more than once, renting has ALWAYS made much more sense for me than buying.
well for me I would rather own my DVD’s. Right now I have about 300. But now that I don’t have to pay so much money to watch the good ones, I have started to just rent. Favorite place? REDBOX
