Media mogul Mark Cuban isn’t known for holding back when it comes to expressing his opinion. In an appearance at a Producer’s Guild conference yesterday, Cuban pulled no punches as he voiced his dissatisfaction with the state of Hollywood’s UltraViolet digital movie locker platform.

UltraViolet has experienced slow but steady growth since its introduction last year, but has come under fire because of the complicated steps consumers must take to access their films through it. Cuban, who owns several media companies, says that UltraViolet needs to be simpler and more intuitive to catch on with consumers. Said Cuban:

“Great concept, but [UltraViolet] won’t work because it’s too much hassle . . . I don’t like the implementation.

They’re trying to solve one hassle but created more. When big studios realize how simple it all should be, they can out-Netflix Netflix.

Is Cuban right here, Insiders? Have you used UltraViolet and come to the same conclusion?

I like that it offers HD. The only part I didn’t get was why I had to download Flixster and they don’t allow streaming of all movies. I think I have to go to Parmount to stream some. I like Amazon since it also allows HD streaming but it doesn’t allow HD downloading. There is no trust. Why not get a high quality HD download w/o DRM? I like that more companies are using clouds now so I re-download and stream as needed, I just am not happy that everything is about licenses and rights you you always have concern over losing rights to watch something you “own”

I say they replace UltraViolet with something simpler, let’s call it “X-Ray”, or, why not – “GammaRay”, whereby they place a chip in your brain such that every time you as much as think about anything that Hollywood has produced, you feel the urge to whip out your credit card and give them some money. Worry about providing some usable value later.
